If the prompt asks to write about favorite teacher, does the teacher have to be someone in academia? Can he be a family member or a close friend who taught the applicant to value something in life?

Could you please show us the exact prompt?

This is the prompt.

Tell us about your best teacher ever—or your toughest, or your worst. What distinguished this teacher from the others you’ve known?

Could the person you have in mind truly be not just a good teacher, but your "best", "toughest", or "worst" teacher?

what do you mean ?

The prompt asks for your "best" teacher (or "worst" or "toughest").

One might automatically think that a teacher works in a school.

You are suggesting that your teacher does not.

Are you sure that the person you have in mind is truly your best teacher?

yes the person that I have in mind is the creme of creme. I do have some favorites teachers at school but I would like to write about someone who has brought a lot meaningful things in my personal and academic life . This person is not the guy who grades my papers or the woman who gives math quizzes. The person that I am thinking about taught me the greatest lessons in life and shaped the foundation of my education. He was my tutor. Nevertheless, you are right sir. I do feel that somebody will automatically think of the teacher as a teacher in my school. That's what I thouhgt of when I first read the prompt. Otherwise I would not even ask if I could write about someone who is not working in my school or any other school. What do you think?

I think that a tutor would be a reasonable response to the question.

Make sure, though, that the essay reveals you, not just your tutor!

thanks sir

You're welcome!

:)

it's probably better to interpret it in your own way anyways...more creative, and all that. (:
