@yikesyikesyikes That makes sense…I had essentially been thinking of the “in between” schools JadedJunior mentioned as reaches anyway. But hey, match or reach, I think I’ll just give it a shot.
@prezbucky I really hope OSU won’t have an off day when reading my application! Then again, that’s smart to have another in-state school as a backup. I was thinking about adding CWRU, but I guess that’d be more of a match than a safety. So probably Miami of Ohio then. And to answer your question, yes, I could afford it. I mean, it would be nice to get scholarship money, but my parents are able to pay full tuition if it’s where I want to go. (Of course, that’s not to say that I wouldn’t pick the better aid package, given comparable schools. I definitely would.)
@2muchquan I appreciate the advice. Thank you! I never really thought about it that way; the more I think about it, the distinction between match and reach isn’t really all that important (at least in my case.)
@youcatscatz Exactly. It makes sense in some cases, but I don’t see it with yours.
UMD CP and UWisconsin Madison are excellent for CS (both better than tOSU for CS specifically and definitely, way more than Miami OH) and safeties for you. Apply in September and you’re good no matter what!
Another possibility is to use Rolling Admissions to apply to Penn State/Schreyer (Schreyer is the Honors College, one of the best in the country): apply in September, you should hear back quickly about general admissions and therefore know you have a safety.
CWRU EA is another great choice.
@MYOS1634 Those are some options I’ll definitely have to consider, thanks. I could be wrong, but I don’t think Schreyer at PSU is rolling admissions. Their website says decisions for the Honors College are released in the first half of March. Unless they send a likely letter or something?
You’re right, that’s why I said you’d hear quickly for ‘general admission’ (top applicants who apply in September hear very quickly) but for Schreyer indeed you’d have to apply, do the interview, and wait till March. But still, you’d have one admission known early on. It’s essentially be for peace of mind.
Umdcp and Uwisconsin would probably be better safeties but you may have to wait a bit more.
Oh, gotcha. Yes, peace of mind would be nice
If you are looking at computer science, especially with schools such as MIT and CMU, I recommend you also have a look at RPI. They have a very good CS program, and CMU even calls them a peer school.
Yep, I’ll definitely be looking at RPI. Thanks.
