My S2 has been accepted (likely letters for some) to some very good schools and I need help. He does not know exactlly what he wants to study but knows he wants it to be business related. He really likes the Management Science and Engineering program at Stanford but has not heard from them yet. I am wondering if the difference in these schools really matters??? Our EFC is expected to be great at a couple of them (around $11K) and ok at others (around $20K). They just have different formulas.

So he has been accepted to MIT and WUSTL and received likely letters from Columbia, Cornell, and Dartmouth. These are all great schools but do any of them stand "head and shoulders" above the others? I would really like input from those with experience in the job market. Thanks in advance. I appreciate the time people take here... CC has been an invaluable resource.

Congrats on your son’s achievements.

Out of the school’s that you listed, I think MIT and Stanford are heads above the others. I do not mean that as a way to discount the other schools, as they are also some of the top schools in the world.

Does your son have any idea how he wants to leverage a “Management Science and Engineering” degree? What business fields interest him?

Of the schools you listed, I would rank them like this for business:

Stanford

MIT

Columbia

Dartmouth

Cornell

WUSTL

Columbia has the advantage of being in NYC, which opens up elite internship opportunities during the school year. I think that is what puts it ahead of Dartmouth, Cornell, and WUSTL.

@goose7856… unfortunately, he does not know what type of job he wants to end up in. I am a high school history teacher and do not have the knowledge to steer him in the right direction. I have never been in the “business” arena and so do not know enough to give him good advice. I wish I had better knowledge.

He likes the MS&E program because it seems to be a combination of the two fields that interest him which are business and engineering. He has not heard from Stanford yet but is hopeful as his his older brother attends Stanford. He also applied to Wharton and I think that would be his top choice if he gets in. I just told him he needs to focus on the schools he has been accepted to so we can plan some visits. I would like him to visit at least three schools.

Thanks for the response.

Wharton is ahead of MIT for pure business and on par with Standford. If he wants to consider engineering, then MIT might have an advantage as that is its strong suit.

My advice would be to put your son in touch with someone in the business world.
