When I was 9th grade I made several mistakes academically that have proven to be fatal in my attempts to go to college. I seek a degree in communications yet the college am interested in wont accepted me with my GPA. What should I do?

Explain more about what happened, what school you want to go to, and what your stats are.

You can always go to a CSU or an UC…

well really my grades were not up to par (C’S, and D’s) and i was hanging around with wrong crowd and really started behaving different. I’ve change for the better but now im have issues and doubts about my life after college. Should i go to an community school, do my two years then transfer to school im interested in (TCU, MSU, FIU) or just apply and hope for the best.

Are you a senior? What state do you live in? Have you taken the SAT?

yes I am a senior and I live in Miami, Fl. I Plan on taking the SAT and ACT in December.

Please, post your GPA, first with 9th grade, and then without 9th grade. And perhaps some ECs if you have any. And maybe your intended major. Then I might give you suggestions, or even target scores.

My GPA in 9th grade was 0.8. I don’t really know my GPA without that regrettable year. I’ joining the drama and poetry club this year since I’m finally eligible to join. My intended major is Mass communications and a minor in sports journalism.

Calculate your GPA by adding all the numbers - typically A+ 4.3, A 4, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3., B 3, B-2.7, C+ 2.3, C2, D1, F0 - and dividing by the number of classes you’ve taken in 10th and 11th grade.
Some colleges don’t take freshman GPA into account and very few consider them important, but they do look at overall GPA. :s
The exceptions are CSUs, UCs, and a handful of super selective schools like Princeton or Stanford where they expect 4.0’s. Unfortunately you’re out of state for the CSUs and the UCs so even if you could get in, you couldn’t afford them (unless you have $30,000 laying around for CSUs, and frankly paying that much money for super impacted schools wouldn’t be a good investment…)
Your best bets are to apply to the various Florida State schools - UNF should be okay for you, FAU perhaps. You may have to attend community college to keep your grades up and “erase” that freshman year, in order to transfer to a 4-year school with your major. TCU and MSu are out of reach right now, both financially and academically but if you can keep a high GPA in community college you may have a good shot. Florida has some good community colleges (Valencia, Miami Dade) and some horrible ones, so make sure to look at the transfer rate.
Try to take the SAT in November (registration deadline Oct 3), because most students need to take it twice in order to get a decent score. Taking it in December only cuts it too close for many application deadlines, especially for scholarships.

I told my mother the same thing but she wont listen. She already told me that if i attend MDC she is not supporting me financially. so im going to be on my own… I’m taking both the SAT AND ACT for two reason. i want ample amount of time to study and learn the vocabulary words that will be on there. Second, for some reason i work so much better in pressure situations. i tend not to stress for some reason. The ACT and SAT are a week apart, and i tend to do better in similar situations.

???

Why are you taking the SAT and ACT so late? You should be taking them as soon as you can…and then retaking as necessary.

how much will your mom pay for college?

I’m not ready for test. I’m not confident about my chances of passing both with required scores.
