Help?

I'm curious as to what my chances are for getting into Reed, Carleton, Tufts or UNC.

I'm from North Carolina, female, and Reed is top on my list.

Stats:
GPA: UW - 3.6 W - 4.1
Class rank: 89/369 (upper quarter, just barely)
SAT - 2020
(Reading - 680
Math - 670
Writing - 670)
(Retook it today, so that should be higher once I get the new score back)

Senior Schedule:
Honors Sociology and Psychology
Honors Comparitive Religions
Honors Great American Conflicts
AP Literature
AP Government
AP Statistics

I've taken 3 science classes, 4 math (2 honors, 1 AP), 7 history classes (3 honors, 2 AP), 4 english (3 honors, 1 AP), 3 years of spanish (2 honors) along with outdoor leadersip/education, concert band, and a drawing/painting class.

Extracurriculars:
-Should have 100+ service hours by the end of this year. I'm around 90 right now.
- Camp counseling, 90 hours two summers, one of which I forgot to fill out the paper work for.
- Voter registration
- Lots of volunteer work at the democratic office which is politically biased, and therefore doesn't count.
- Marching band for one year (hated it)
- 9 years of tap dance classes
- 8 years of classical piano
- 1 year of jazz piano lessons
- Lots of traveling
- Admining an art and writing community with close to 200 members, which is in the process of putting together and publishing a book (hopefully).
- Lots of art and writing.
- Nominated for Morehead scholarship
- President of the creative writing club
- Editor of the literary magazine
- Member of the Young Democrats club
- Member of the Webdesign club :P

I want to major in history, and minor in womens studies, art, or english. I'm fairly confident that the essay I've written shows how passionate I am.

Are my grades/etc. good enough for Reed? Reed is definatly my top choice. Carleton second, UNC third, and Tufts I'm fairly positive I have no chance of getting into.

Your chances are good at Reed...excellent if you ED. Carleton is a reach; UNC is a slight reach; And, Tufts is a reach.

I live in Chapel Hill, so I'm considering UNC a backup school -laughs- I would hate to stick around here.

Im not going to ED at Reed. It's binding, and there's no way I'll be able to visit before then :/

Tufts is certainly a reach esp. due to your low rank, but if you were to apply ED, you would have more of a chance. I'm fairly certain that if you applied RD you'd be most likely looking at a rejection. You can always post your question again on the Tufts thread; lots of people answer there and you can get other people's opinions. (Btw, I am a current Tufts senior.)

ED at Reed is NOT binding, if you're concerned about financial aid (there are a few schools where it is not binding for financial aid). If Reed is your first choice, go for it!

The reed webpage says it's binding:

"As an early decision applicant, you may submit regular applications to other schools but, if admitted to Reed, you will be expected to withdraw all applications to other institutions, and you may not initiate any new applications. In addition, you may not apply to more than one institution as an early decision candidate."

That sounds pretty binding to me...

That wording is indeed misleading. The pertinent phrase is further down: "...a tentative financial aid decision will be mailed with the offer of admission." The important word is "offer" and they mean it (I questioned admissions about it and they confirmed): The offer can be declined without consequence if the awarded financial aid is not sufficient (this happens sometimes when, e.g., a family cannot liquidate an asset). This is so important that you should double check with them about it; your chances are indeed better at ED!

Arrrrrgh.

If I had known it was nonbinding I would have had my application ready by now. ._.

I hope it's not too late.

I'll start getting it together tomorrow. :</p>
