Help!!!!!

Ok, I have a dilema...I'm planning on applying to Georgetown EA this coming fall and I'm trying to decided whether to apply to the college or the SFS. I would definately apply to SFS to major in international politics but I really don't think I'd get in...(my stats are iffy already for the college). The problem is that at the end of high school I will have only been through German III (and I plan on doing japanese in college because it wasn't offered at my HS). Because of this I didn't take an SAT II test in german because I know I would've done horribly. So, should I take my chances at SFS or just do the college and major in gov't???

my other stats are:
aftrican american male in GA
SAT: 1320 (660 m/v and it was my first time) retaking in june and aiming for a 2100 (750 Cr, 700 math and 650 writing)

ACT: 31 (all subsections 32+ except science) retaking in june aiming for a 33..the current avg. of English, reading and math..lol

SAT II's: I took them yesterday.. probably 750+ US, 700+ math 2c and 650+ on physics

rank/gpa: 6/400 (should be 4 or 5 after this semester) 95.5/3.976 uw ?w

Classes: 3 gifted, 1 honors chorus and PE/health freshmen year 93 gpa
3 gifted, 1 AP (5 on world exam)german and chorus sophmore year 97 GPA
2 gifted, 2 AP, german II and chorus this year 98 GPA
4 AP (gov't and econ count as one), 1 honors (german III) and chorus next year.... probably about a 100 GPA..lol

EC's: VP-elect of NHS and 3 year member(including next year), Prez-elect of Mu Alpha Theta and 3 year member (ditto), Mock trial-attorney for two years, Student govt-VP of student body this year...hopefully president next, scholars bowl 4 years (no major awards) and Odyssey of the Mind for two years (1st in region 4th in state) my sophmore year

Fine Arts: Vocal Music freak- gonna be a 4-year all stater, selected as a finalist for governor's school in vocal music (only 12 men..6 basses make it from the state), 4 year honor choir nominee and lots of other programs and honor choirs

other: Volunteer at local coop (2 hours every two weeks...not much but better than nothing) and lots of church music/leadership stuff. Also... i know all of my recommendations are going to be amAzing!

I think you'll get in either way... you have really good stats, and being a URM almost makes it a sure thing.

Good luck! :)

I would be surprised if you didn't get into the College; however, no matter how good all the stuff you've done outside of school (and your ECs are very impressive), for the SFS you have to have demonstrated serious interest in politics-related stuff. I don't really see that from what you mentioned in your post, unless you get school President next year. All the singing etc. is great, but not really relevant for the SFS. Having said that, I think you are more than qualified and being an URM is huge. Georgetown also tend to care a LOT about grades (I'm basing that generalization on what I've noticed in terms of who got in there from my school this year), and your class rank is awesome. Anyway, good luck to you.

Thanks...I think I will apply to the college because I absolutely love going to Georgetown and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize that....lol, I have a friend applying to SFS next year who will be taking AP Latin and AP French and has an 800 on the sat 2 for latin.....crazy

in case you dont know, getting in the college is just as difficult, if not more than getting in the sfs. for the class of 2009, the acceptance rate was 19.5 vs 20-21.
so dont consider that you arent good enough for the sfs...

I think you should apply SFS. If that's what you want to do then that's what you want to do. You are either qualified or you aren't. And you don't necessarily have to have demonstrated a serious interest in politics through your ECs (I find more of those people to be gov. majors in the college.) A natural interest that shows up in your essays will do just fine. Also, the fact that you are a URM will benefit you more if you apply SFS instead of COL. Your stats are competitive. If you want to do SFS then apply SFS. They either want you or they don't.

But isn't a big part of getting into SFS proficiency in a foreign language? I would much rather go to SFS but I don't want to sacrifice going to georgetown by applying if I have no chance. I mean, any other college I go to I'm just gonna be doing poly-sci and int'l relations if they have it....

barcaholic, the sfs acceptance percentage may be higher than the college, but the sfs applicant pool is extremely specified in a way that the college one isn't.

by personal experience, proficiency in foreign language is not any sort of prerequisite to get into SFS. i got in and i speak just english. what i think is more important, maybe much more, is a demonstrated interest in politics ( in addition to things like grades, scores).

does demonstrated interest have to be like stuff like working on campaigns and writing editorials or can it be like watching c-span 2 hours a day and watching the british elections for no real reason?...I mean I worked on Kerry's campaign, but I live in georgia so there was not much for me to do ya know?...I don't agree with any of the other candidates..lol

way to be a butt!.....I hate people sometimes...it's not like I wanted my ancestors to be sold into slavery, I assure you. If it helps I'm 1/32 Irish...but I didn't ask for my great-great-great-grandmother to be raped by her overseer either....

Wow, way to make this situation awkwardly morbid. :o

And, even if he said it in a brusque way, it is essentially true. While you are a good candidate, if you were asian or caucasian you would have a hard time getting in (and unfortunately, you probably would not- that is, with your current stats).

But alas, that's how the system works, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

As a minority (along with your other impressive characteristics), I would say you are a good bet for most top schools.

I just really hate it when people are like "Oh you'll get into so and so's college just because your black"...really, I'm much more than my race! Truthfully, I don't want to go to a college that i was accepted to because of my race...it's just not right!

fut1800- the serenity prayer would be appropriate about now. Follow YOUR dream-period. Do not let a flawed system drag you down-ever!

You are not going to get in because you are Black.

You are going to get in because of your superb scores, and your ability to succeed with the resources around you.

Georgetown doesn't accept a color, the admissions committee accepts people, aiming for a diverse student body. People shouldn't make this a race issue.

Let me clarify. i doidn't say that your stats are bad, they're vry good. However, as a minority, you have a better chance than asians and whites because schools ARE looking to diversify their studentbody.

I don't know much about Georgetown's admissions stats, all I know was that mine were good enough for them, so I don't really know about what your chances are with the SFS as compared to the College, but one of the people at the student panel during the open house said that it's usually pretty easy to transfer schools and that he transferred from the college to the SFS after one year. HOwever, he said it can be really tough years because it is based on available space-if 5 people transfer form SFS to another school in GTown they will accept 5 transfers into SFS, so you're never guaranteed a spot, especially since SFS is the hardest school to transfer into.

fut!
I'm an African American male, and I've also considered applying to the SFS to major in Culture & Politics. I do believe that you should go for it if that's what you really want, as your stats are promising. SFS is hard to x'fer into, and... I really think if you were at the College, after a while you'd wish u had applied SFS anyway (at least I would)

And yes, I too have remnants of slave owner in my blood, as well :) but that doesn't mean i won't be as competitive as anyone else at all the places I apply.

.....now I think I've decided to apply to SFS....oh and guess what all current juniors...the application for 2006 is up!!!! Woot Woot. Candlize, hopefully I'll see you there!

fut18000 i am also an african american male with very similar stats and I showed very little interest in politics but I got in. As long as you express in your essays your reasons for wanting to be there than I think you will be fine. It worked out for me.
