Herberger Institute of Design & Music, ASU

What do you all know about Herberger? Specifically, what is the music school known for? How good is their composition major?

Gorgeous facilities, good voice faculty, excellent organ program and good BM program for music theater. Best opportunities are those students who can qualify for the Barrett Honors program and pass the auditions. Combine the two and it’s a good financial safety even for OOS students. I’m sorry that I don’t know anything about the composition program. But maybe some of the composition people can fill you in.

I just glanced through the theory/composition department website - as you can do (and probably have,) and read the bios of the professors, about opportunities to have one’s work played, and visiting professors - all things I recommend that you do. What are you looking for in a composition program? I assume this is for undergrad? What attracts you to Arizona State? It looks like it could be a fine experience for an undergrad composer - but, I don’t actually know anything in particular about it beyond the website. Do you feel like you would have an affinity with the professors there? Does the school itself attract you? The location? The price? If you’re looking for desert state schools with composition also check out Univ. of Nevada Las Vegas. If you tell us more about what you’re looking for in a composition program we might be able to make some suggestions. But ASU definitely looks worth checking out. I’m sure you could have a good experience there.

Hi
Thanks all. I am asking for my daughter. She has been accepted into Barrett for physics. She is almost equally interested in music, but composition not performance, hence she did not do the music audition route. I understand if she wishes to pursue music at Herberger, she would have to apply there for next year. We are looking at the various schools that have accepted her and trying to weigh the programs.

Do you all have any experience with Tulane, Univ of Rochester or Case Western Reserve’s composition major?
