Here's financial ratings for PUBLIC universities from Standard and Poors

These are bond ratings, as published mid-2013, by Standard and Poors. The list starts on page 29 of the link.

A different thread in this forum includes the link for private colleges and universities

Here’s the link for non-profit private colleges and universities. The listing starts about halfway through the report.

Public university report is strange—no UMass Amherst (state flagship), but Worcester State University IS listed, and the other “state universities” (Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Salem State), etc are not

Michigan, Texas, and Virginia are the three state schools that are rated AAA. :)

Some colleges do not apply for bond ratings. For example, some public universities use a separate corporation to build their residence halls, which is separately rated. Some public universities may use public agencies for much of their financing.

Nothing beats a HUGE endowment…

Many publics only can use debt through the state bonding process and get the state rating for their bonds. UWisconsin System is large example of this.

The link for Standard and Poor’s online report that listed the bond ratings of all public colleges no longer works. The link for private colleges also no longer works. I couldn’t find it in a search today. If anyone does find a revised link, please post it.
