I am looking for at least 15 colleges to apply to. Any suggestions would be welcome.

forgot to mention Colby

You have really strong SATs and a nice class rank. I don't know how these schools are for aid. Look at Tulane, Denison and College of Wooster which all give good aid. Good luck!

Apply to some national universities outside of the LAC. Kudos on the perfect TOFEL score.

Do you have any ideas as to a possible major?

Maybe Dartmouth. Not sure about aid, but it seems to fit otherwise.

Dartmouth and Middlebury.

Macalester is international friendly and a very good LAC.

I don't see how it's silly for someone to ask for advice just because they have good scores. He's looking for a type of college, as seen by the ones he's already picked, and he's asking for us to name some other colleges like the ones he likes. It has nothing to do with "Oh, help me because I have no idea where I'll be accepted!". He's said nothing that indicates he wants prestige over fit; in fact, most of the colleges he's named show that he is looking already based on fit.

Whatever, that is your opinion. I just see this over and over on this website and it gets really old. If you are THAT smart, why do you need advice?

the people who really need help dont have uberstats.

"Fit" has NOTHING to do with stats. If you think it does, then you dont get it.

Fit has a lot to do with stats. The top schools are far more similar (in terms of resources, student quality) than they are different.

Also, this kid's list is very much based on fit looking at it. Its why I recommended Dartmouth and Midd, they are in line with his other schools.

you should probably add 1 more safety just to be sure
other than that your list looks fine

@ catfishin: Even people who have ""UBERSTATS"" need help. Look at it this way, I'm an international with no prospect of visiting these schools. I know nobody who has attended any of these schools and so know next to nothing about these schools. THAT is why I am asking for help.

Btw, though I am looking to major in Physics I am looking for good LACs so that I can have a grounding in all disciplines.

your safeties aren't safeties. i bet they'll reject you thinking that there's no chance of you attending the school.

@ sleepyhead: dude, that is what I am extremely worried about.

I'd read fewer sinister plot twists into your application process.

You have excellent standardized test scores, Skunk, but these are pretty commonplace in admissions offices at the top schools you're applying to ("only" at the 80th %ile or so of applicants). Your GPA is actually somewhat below median for several of these colleges but, obviously, it needs to be interpreted in the setting of the specific high school you've attended and difficulty of course selection. With the possible exception of Hampden Sydney, I strongly doubt any college on your list will believe you're not serious in your interest.

You’re clearly a great candidate and your "reach" schools, I'd argue, are at "match" level. If you don't get in, it won't be for lack of proven academic excellence.

From the look of your SAT 2’s, I’m guessing your interests lie primarily in the physical sciences and/or math. Your choices of Carleton, Swarthmore, Reed, Grinnell, and Williams, in particular, in this regard seem very well thought out. I’d expect you’d see acceptance to at least three of these five but one never really knows given the capricious nature of the admissions game. You may want to consider adding, LAC-wise, Oberlin and Wesleyan and, if willing to venture cross-country, Pomona. All have strong science offerings. I know you’ve avoided inner city and large schools. If somewhat flexible in this regard, you may want to consider Chicago and Rice - both small by university standards.

Good luck.

skunk, your college list is too naive.
i heard Tulane doesn't give as miuch aid.

Davidson, DePauw, Lawrence and as another all-male alternative to Hampden-Sydney, Wabash in Indiana.

Clark U. in Worcester, Massachusetts would be a good safety.
