This is my first semester as a freshman: i'm a physics major

Archaeology & Human Evolution Main Campus B-
Calculus I Main Campus C-
Int to Worlds of Mus Main Campus B+
General Univ Physics I Main Campus B+
Physics Seminar A

My overall gpa is a 2.80. the medical school i wish to attend, the 2009's incoming class had a cumulative gpa of 3.54

pretty sad i can't retake that calc grade. brough me down .40 points =[

Nothing is set in stone but you need to pick up your grades.

You should prepare a backup plan, though. Your performance in non-major classes appears to be very subpar and you haven’t even piled on the med school prerequisites yet.

Either that or you could consider trying to transfer to a college with more grade inflation. State schools are kind of GPA killers.

Relax, it happens to all of us. I just got my final grades for the semester and I got a B on one of my major courses, I am going to learn from that mistake and move on because that is all I can do. You might have to switch career plans, but give it another semester and then see where you stand.

Have you taken advantage of all the help available at your campus? Have you gone to see your professors (or TAs) for help, or taken advantage of tutoring facilities?

Are you staying current with all your assignments - doing your math problem sets when they are assigned, doing the assigned readings before the lectures that discuss them, writing your papers before the night before they are due so that you can look them over and revise them, etc.?

Are you pretty much following the standard advice - spend two hours in concentrated, solitary study (without TV or Facebook) for every hour of class time?

Are you paying full attention in class or are you being distracted by Facebooking or texting?

Are you getting enough sleep? Eating properly?

You definitely did not, but you’re going to have to do some soul searching to find out how exactly you are going to get near a 3.9 from now on. Picking the right classes is huge for getting a good GPA, only pick classes that fit you and you can get an A.

If you can’t get the GPA you want I would really think about a career in computer science. The demand is crazy (especially in the Bay area, NYC, and Austin) and you’ll likely be making doctor money or more in the same amount of time and if you are lucky maybe more. Just something to consider. Its a world thats less GPA focused than med school.

Or if healthcare is really your passion, check out the many other healthcare-related professions - public health mgt, physician’s asst, epidemiology, to name but a few.

To live the next four years in fear of getting a few Bs or Cs so that you might possibly still get into med school, sounds like a recipe for a really ugly college experience. And you haven’t even taken the traditional weeder courses yet, like organic chem. I’m not saying you shouldn’t try - but if, by the end of this year, you aren’t make top grades in the courses required for medical school, then you really need to change directions.

^My general care physician is a D.O., apparently the programs are based more on humanities and your ability to interact with people as opposed to some M.D. programs that have a more calculated approach to admissions.

Annasdad gave golden advice; read it over & over. You can still turn things around but no parties except Saturday, no hours on end of video games & FB. You have to go hardcore. Take copious notes and then that night copy them into a second notebook. Organize and work with study groups. If you can’t hack undergrad you have no chance of making it through Med School, so prove to yourself NOW that you can make your studies come first. I really wish you the best & Merry Christmas by the way!

i don’t party. i don’t drink. i don’t skip classes or text during them. i study, i do my assignments, i pay attention, make flash cards and study.
