Herman W. Lay Scholarship

Is this based more on grades or creativity?

I would say both just about equally!

I'm sure awesome grades are needed for everyone but creativity will help you distinguish yourself from everyone with good grades who is up for it.

Interesting stories. So I was being a perfectionist and editing my Lay essays until I submitted them at 11:47 pm on 1/15, after submission it immediately went to a page that said it was sent to some address at 12:09 am on 1/16. Their server is 22 minutes fast and that made my application a day late. I'm so annoyed. If they don't take it I'm going to raise hell.

dude, u think thats bad? i couldn't send it in until martin luther king day!!! my internet explorer wouldn't let me send it in, and i finally gave up and went to my friends house today to send it and bingo it worked...

do u think they will rescind it?

I honestly have no idea on how picky the will be about time. I would assume since they would still be getting a lot of mailed in applications that they would take it, but you really never know.

I got my postcard saying they received my Lay Application today. How about you jawaad87?

no I didn't get it yet. today's january 28th. and i live in NY, so maybe it'll comE?

That's probably true...I didn't know you were from NY. I'm from Columbia, SC which is only about two hours from Greenville so that could explain it.

what's your sn? i'd like to talk with ya

I'll private message it to you so I don't get spammed to hell

i got the confirmation.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL

got the confirmation in todays mail (monday) westren nebraska

I got the confirmation around when you all did. anyone hear back yet? i'm so anxious! i heard that if we made finalist we will hear back in february. good luck everyone!

Well...interviews aren't until April so I get the feeling we probably won't be notified until March. Hopefully I'm wrong though and we hear sooner.

Heh...well I totally just lied.

Quote from the Furman Message board at engagefurman.com

"Students who are selected as finalists for the Lay scholarship will be notified by the end of February and will be invited to interview for the scholarship in April. Winners will be determined after the interviews."

April is a bad month for me as far as visiting colleges goes. April 9 is my senior Prom, 15-17 is my big skating competition. Hopefully the scholarship competition won't be those weekends (and hopefully I will be a finalist). Does anyone know what happens if a finalist can't make it to the scholarship weekend? Are they automatically disqualified?

Also, for all of you that applied, what are your stats and what are you planning on majoring in?

For all of you submitting information for the Lay's scholarship, my daughter went through this process last year. You should be notified sometime soon if you are being considered for the Lay process. Notification will also include acceptance at Furman. Most selected finalists receive at least a 50% tuition scholarship, with a chance to compete for either a Duke (100% tuition) or the Lay (full scholarship), In order to have a shot, however, at least last year, you had to actually come to campus for the Lay scholarship interview weekend (2 days, with your parent's also invited). Last year, this was the first weekend in April (this was the same day that aceptance letters are received for all your other admissions). You will then be notified by FedEx about 2 weeks later if it is a positive decision.

I know they do read your essays; my duaghter received comments from everyone involved in the process about one of her short essays last year. And you will meet some incredibily talented candidates. Most of the finalists we met last year had SAT's in the upper 1400 to upper 1500's (although there were a few exceptions in the upper 1300's). I cannot comment on exactly what they are loooking for in their Lay selections, but the Duke is a fairly nice scholarship to receive as well, and there are many more of these available than the Lays.

Good luck to all of you.

Thanks so much ifly... I have a question about the actual competition weekend. What did the two days actually consist of? And what time do you arrive (on a Friday, I believe) and leave (on Saturday)?

Did your student end up winning anything and did they choose to attend Furman?

iflyjets:

I assume your daughter ended up at Furman. How does she like it? My son is considering Furman and I'm a little concerned about what I've read about the Furman "bubble", the social life, and the religious fervor at the school. I'm Jewish and my wife is Catholic - I don't think our son is prepared for Southern Baptists and any possible proselytising. I don't have a problem but he just hasn't been exposed. Also, we're from New Jersey.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I want the scholarship i deserve it the most and i can't afford college like everyone else here can because my daddy's efc is 20k but he's willing to pay up to 15k (state university total cost), only. So i need this. Please withdraw. And i'm not stupid i got a 1450 on my sats and i'm asian so that doubles.

Ok, I'm going to pray that was meant as some sort of joke...

"my daddy's efc is 20k but he's willing to pay up to 15k"

-You are unfortunate
