hmmm it doesnt say the word limits and
since it does not ask anything about my interest but 'why NU' only
my essay is not very long..
how long are yours?

well there were a couple threads posted about this, but since i didn't respond to any one of them i'll respond to this one. the usual length is around 500 words so try to make it reasonably close to that...like over 800 would be too much but under 250? too little...basically if you can get your point across in an eloquent manner it should be fine.

From what I've seen around the forums, most people are aiming between 400 and 600 words, but people have gotten in with less and more than that. Say what you need to say, and as long as the essay is concise, you should be fine.
I haven't written mine yet :o, but I'm guessing it will be about 400 words. I could make it longer or shorter, but 400 words is just feeling right to me.

hahahaha i still havnt written mine yet either lol procrastinate ftw

and another question. would it be acceptable to explain my academic interest?

What is your academic interest?

I talked about how NU's 5-year double degree program with WCAS and Bienen was tailored specifically for me. I also talked about my experience visiting the campus, staying with my friend at a dorm, shadowing a mock trial meeting, and having a piano lesson with a professor. I also threw in that my dad conducted his Medical Fellowship over there.

Mine was roughly 370 words. 300-500 words is smart. They don't want to read too much. Concision is admirable.

(accepted ED.)

wow thats impressive. well the thing is im an international and i haven't been to northwestern and none of my close relatives are affiliated with NU anyway (actually no one that i know of). my academic interest is econ/finance so wud it be okay if i copy and delete some paragraphs on other 'why' essays to fit it specifically for NU?

As long as it is tailored specifically to NU and NU's programs, you should be fun. Just do your research, but don't sound like you're regurgitating information from the website. Be honest and passionate about it and you should be fine.

lol hey if i pm u later today wud u mind commenting on it please?

sure thing.

There are LOTS of info/videos on NU website. You can easily come up with stuff to write without visiting if you do the homework!

My essay was 600-700 words or so; they didnt have any problem with it.

kims107:

"so wud it be okay if i copy and delete some paragraphs on other 'why' essays to fit it specifically for NU?"

In short, I'd say no. The biggest advice I have been given when I wrote my Why NU was that if you can take the name of the university out and replace it with another and it still works, it is not specific enough.

Most all of the top univeristies in the nation have beautiful campuses, talented professors, care about their students, and a billion opportunities. I know you haven't visited, but check into the website. What major, why? Hear any cool things about specific professors you want to work with? What opportunities in particular do you want to take advantage of?
With that in mind, you may or may not have a lot of content having not visited. So your essay shouldn't be pages long, because it stands the chance of being most filler. Write about what you DO know and why you want NU.

674 words...good enough?

moviefreak,

I'd try to keep it below 500 if you can. I know there's a lot to say, but brevity is power.

I have not written mine yet, but I guess take out some few things that everyone will say.

mine is only 300
i talked a little about setting, location, etc i acutally toured the campus
a little about its business programs and mentioned two professors

wat else should there be? i don't really have a story or anything like that?
and how do i tell them i want to work/attend seminars with the professors?

that you want to work/attend seminars with the professors is a great reason why you would want to attend Northwestern, which is the prompt of the statement. There shouldn't be any problem of "fitting" that in.

I'm finished wiht mine. I highly doubt that I'll get in, but I believe I wrote a very good essay. 565 words.

asianxtreme-- business programs?

can you elaborate a little? I'd like to look into that for myself lol. All I know about undergrad business at NU is that they don't offer business as a major.

As for advice about length, I'd try and stay under or around 500 words. I got in with a 750 word essay, but then again they only had to read 1,700 applications. There's probably 20,000 plus for regular decision, so shorter would be better.
