Hey, can someone help? Georgia Tech and MIT

Hey everyone. I’m just finishing junior year, and I was wondering what you thought my chances are of being accepted into MIT or Georgia Tech. Here it goes.

I have a 3.69 unweighted gpa, and about a 4.2 weighted gpa (out of 5). My grades have improved steadily over the course of high school - freshmen year I had around a 3.41 gpa, sophomore year a 3.67 gpa, and junior year a 4.0 gpa. Additionally, my math and science grades have improved. Freshmen year I got a B in math (honors), a B in biology (honors), and a B+ in physical science (honors). Sophomore year I got a B+ in math (honors), a B+ in chemistry (honors), and an A in my other science class. Junior year I got an A in AP computer science, AP chemistry, Honors physics, and a fourth science class (a very creative science class that is extremely difficult to explain).

Additionally, by the time I graduate, I will have taken 5 AP classes, and I got a 34 on the ACT.

Lastly, my extra curricular’s are kind of interesting. I worked in a science lab last summer, with only a professor and a few grad students, doing original research. In the end, I got my name published as a co-author on the scientific paper. I will be doing the followup research this summer. By the time I graduate high school, I will have my name as a co-author in 6 scientific papers.

In addition to my lab work, I also am a nationally rated/ranked fencer. I am one of the top rated fencers in my age group, and I am the highest rating possible.

Finally, I play the cello, I am an Eagle Scout, and I started my own club. Thank you so much for reading, and any criticism would be extremely helpful. Thanks a lot!

Your grades will hurt you a lot. I am not very familiar with the american grading system but I’m pretty sure 3.69 isn’t great, especially for colleges such as MIT.

Co-authoring 6 papers is great! Are they in the same subject? Are they related to your intended major? Also, it is worth noting that if you are the Xth co-author (where X > 3), the value of the papers go down drastically. Also, what journals are they being published in?

Do you want to continue fencing in college? I would say that you stand a strong chance of getting recruited to certain Ivies, even MIT if you are ranked that high nationally and can get your GPA up to a 3.75/3.8.

You are on the right path to getting selected at a top university. Just work hard and improve your grades

Hey Mumbai98. On four of the papers I am the 1st co-author (second author) listed. On the other two, I am third and fourth author. The papers are in my intended major (electrical engineering). I am unsure of what journal they are being published in as of now - the professor is on vacation right now.

In college I would definitely want to continue fencing.

Lastly, since it’s the end of my junior year, I don’t really see a way to improve my grades this year. However, I’m sure I could continue to get a 4.0 next year. However, that doesn’t count as part of my gpa…

Thanks so much for all your help.
