Okay, so I am interested in Hunter College, Pace U, Adelphi, NYU, Fordham, New Paltz, UMass Boston because I made sure that these schools had Chinese and I liked them. The only thing about the schools, is my minor. I want to major in International Relations, which I have been very serious about. However, my minor is Chinese as a foreign language. I have been taking Chinese for four years in high school and I want to continue my study in college. While I researched Hunter's Chinese program, it mostly offered Traditional character teaching. I thought this was horrible, I have only learnt Simplified and I do not think Traditional Characters will benefit me if I ever decide to go to China. I really want to go to Hunter, help what do I do?

1) Go to Hunter and learn Traditional
2) Go somewhere else and learn Simplified
3) Go to Hunter and drop Chinese

Best of luck

Thanks. BUMP BUMP anyone else?

You should contact the department and ask them about your situation. You also could check the textbooks on the bookstore website; the intro and intermediate courses at many universities require a workbook for both simplified and traditional chaacters. I don’t know if the mention of traditional characters in the course description for Elementary Chinese means that only traditional characters were taught. If you check the course descriptions for Intermediate Chinese, they certainly mention that students learn both simplified and traditional characters. I would be very surprised if their program is based mostly on traditional characters.

Do you know if the courses are just Traditional characters, or do they teach both traditional and simplified characters? I really think you should call them. And if they teach both, then there’s nothing wrong with learning both traditional and simplified? It can’t hurt in any way.
