HEY!!! I don't know!!!!!

HEY, back at you!

Ah, working? There's a new idea.

All kinds of interesting things on this thread!

My daughter is currently interviewing for internships. She's now interested in pursuing costume design which she said may mean going to a graduate school for theatre.

Susan,
I would suggest that your daughter drive to Bellingham, WA and take the Alaska State Ferry up to Skagway and then drive to Anchorage. If she would like to do that, she would have to book it asap as car/people space goes quickly. I used to book that trip, all the time, when I worked for a travel agency in Vancouver (circa 1980) :)

Mauretania...thanks for that information. That was what I believe she was planning to do. We could not book it now because no aspects of this plan are in place. She needs to find a friend to go, figure the dates, get a job in Alaska. While she gets out of school in May, she was saying she wants to go to her sister's graduation from high school and that is not until June 18, so I dunno. We will likely talk more seriously of these ideas over the winter break.

Susan

Susan,
I'm curious - when (and how long) is your D's winter break? It seems to be different everywhere. My nephew (at UT-Austin) has almost 2 months off starting Dec 10th!
My D has hers from December 24th through January 23rd.

Mauretania...
I think my D is done on Dec. 18 as that is her last exam. I think she goes back around Jan. 23. However, she is only going to be home for the first nine days most likely. Her varsity ski team at Brown will be having their winter ski training camp at Waterville Valley in NH for three official weeks starting Jan. 3 but actually the coach will be there starting Dec. 27 and kids can arrive earlier (though no condo rented yet by univ.) and train and she will stay with a teammate who lives in that area until Jan. 3 and then the team is in resort housing. She has some races during that period as well. My guess is she may come home for a night in early Jan. to see the musical her sister created/directed and is performing in. That is something she has mentioned and is typical of her. So, I guess I will only have nine days with her!

Susan

my d. comes home Dec. 15 and classes don't start again until Jan. 15. She is planning to return to teach at the Summer Urban Programs run by PBHA at Harvard. It will be her third summer. They do hire counselors from other colleges if any of your undergrads are seeking experience with kids in an urban setting. Info at www.pbha.org and go to programs, then SUP.

My daughter will be going back on Jan 10 with a friend (will be spending a few days). So I'll really only have her here for 2 weeks:(
BTW, she really does miss her riding but said even if she had a horse nearby, she wouldn't have the time on the weekends since she spends most of that time at the Met. Her classes are everyday, all day long so she only has the evenings/weekends for homework.

To be as succinct as sgiovinc1: Not a clue!!!

(I'm so impressed with all your kids who plan so far ahead.)

Mauretania...I hope your daughter is loving her school. I remember her whole search process. And yes, that sort of degree does involve many hours of class time (as will my younger child's BFA programs, if she gets in, lol).

Casualresponder....that program sounds like the one that InterestedDad's daughter has done.....

Susan

casualresponder, that's the one I told my son about. It would be good if he could interview during the winter since the February interview date is not convenient. Could it be possible to interview in winter? I wanted him to send this email to you instead of me but he hasn't...since he is a Swarthmore student, and not a Harvard student, would they make any concessions for him?

Susan,
No, I wouldn't say "loving" it. I asked her if she thought she had made the right choice and she replied "yes". She has good and bad days. The foundation year is a chore, though loves the drawing classes. Gets stressed out over her 3-D projects and coming up with an idea and making it come out "exactly right". Doesn't think about grades at all, just the next project she has to work on.

Though she would like to go out and just have fun sometimes, she hasn't met any others that are interested in anything besides going to celeb hangouts and drinking expensive ****tails (rather a large wealthy bunch of students). She'd never been
in this position where she hadn't met like-minded people so it's a bit hard.

Things should be better next year once she's actually started her major.

Mauretania...she is at least hanging in there. I think my D would be like that about coming up with ideas and making them just right too. I hope your D connects with kids on campus down the line. There hopefully will be kids there "like her". One thing my D HAS loved at her school is the kids who have a lot in common with her though have diverse backgrounds from her, if that makes sense.

Susan,
Oh, yes, she's definitely not a quitter and she did go there knowing that it didn't have a "true" campus. There's a large international student body and they pretty much stick to themselves (language issues) except for the study abroad students but they're usually only there for one semester (her Swedish friends will leave soon!).

BTW, Frank Gehry spoke at her school Monday night. She was going to go (though she's not a fan!) just to see the "handkerchief" talk but had too much homework. That
reminded me of your D!

Diverse backgrounds - I know exactly what you mean Susan.

BTW....My D comes home from CMU Dec 21st....as last exam is Dec. 20th. Then she returns Jan 9th as classes begin on Jan 10th. Isn't that short for a Christmas/Holiday break? I don't understand why unless they finish classes earlier in the Spring... When do your kids get out for the holidays and when does their summer vacation begin?

SGV1: Lurking around. Just your D's luck. Our kid out on Dec 10th..... But last last and only final Dec 20th. Got him to fly home for 9 days on a cheap seat. take final, then take the previously ordered plane home same day. oink.

S probably not home for summer- V good chance he'll try to get internship with major prof; same as last year.

OOOOOO....Oink, that hurts!! Made sure D got the plane AFTER last final...because her finals are scattered. When do they get out for SUMMER??? I think that I would like her to have some sort of internship in CHEM..though she claims she isn't very much interested in the GREEN thing..they're big on environmental issues...and as a true scientist, she couldn't give a damn! What's a few maimed mice and/or guinea pigs or a few dirty rivers when you have to discover something for the good of all mankind!!! Like developing a new flavor of PEPSI, for example.....they have Cherry, Vanilla, Lemon PEPSI..how 'bout CHOCOLATE PEPSI??? SHe's into FLavor chemistry.

sgiovinc1
I guess that shows all schools are different (I thought maybe it was a geographical thing). My daughter:
Winterbreak Dec 24-Jan23
Spring Break Mar 20-26
Summer Vacation begins May 16

Daughter goes on the quarter system
Winter break Dec 9 thru Jan 2
Spring break March 17- 27
Summer vacation begins June 8
