Heyo, Please Chance Me (again, lol)

— ACT (breakdown): 30
— Unweighted GPA: 4.0
— Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/278
— AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Calc senior year. I’m self-studying AP Psychology, APES, APUSH, and AP Human Geo. while I’m in my gap year. I’m not sure if I’ll take the tests at the end of the year because I mean… I’m just self-studying them because they’re all interesting classes I wasn’t able to take, lol. (school started offering the AP classes for underclassmen when I was already a sophomore, and I couldn’t fit APES into my schedule unless I missed the entire first semester of the course… my school was ridiculous. there’s more information about this in my other post.)
— Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): um… unless you count being part of Top 10% and a Valedictorian major awards, then I don’t have any. I received teacher-chosen excellence awards in both history and English my junior and senior years respectively, so yeehaw.

— Extracurriculars:

  1. Family Tutor: my brother struggles with ADHD, so I’m the one who helps him (and my mother, really) understand/teach him his homework. 9, 10, 11, 12, GY (GY = Gap Year).
  2. Self-Studying the AP courses I listed: GY.
  3. Self-Taught Tumblr Theme Coder: exactly what it sounds like, lol. I taught myself how to code tumblr themes in ninth grade. I stopped for a while because senior year ate my time up. I’ve made sixteen-seventeen, and, together, they have garnered around 12.5K uses. 9, 10, 11, GY.
  4. Blog-Runner: sooo… when in high school, I decided to make a blog documenting five important years of my life (from eighteen until twenty-three). it’s kind of an advice/experience blog where I write what’s on my mind and share quirky information about myself. I included how I want to expand this when I head to college. 12, GY.
  5. Poetry Writer: poetry is a big part of my life. I didn’t start a blog for it until my gap year, but i’ve been writing it since ninth grade. I was always afraid to share it out of fear of people finding the blog and such. terrible excuse, I know. 9, 10, 11, 12, GY.
  6. Foreign Language Learner: ayyye, okay, so I decided to learn dutch during my gap year, study some korean, and expand my french. (I took up to honors french iii in high school. french iv wasn’t offered.) I want to be fluent in at least some other language besides english before I die. GY.
7.-8. The same old “community service” and “academic” clubs (beta, etc.) everyone does.

— Essays:

  1. Common App: 8/10? I wrote about how I use ten minutes at the end of every week to reflect on that week’s events. I incorporated my love of writing. I mean, it’s not the “I fled my country to survive” kind of essay, but I thought it was good? It was reviewed by three people on here, and they all helped me revise it and said it was well written, so I don’t know.
  2. Supplemental: Most of my schools did not or do not require supplemental essays, but I thought my bowdoin supplemental essay was pretty good. I chose “to count nature a familiar acquaintance” and talked about how the mountains in Maine and the mountains in Tennessee call my name to lure me to explore them. I can’t really rank this one.

— Recommendations:
Senior year English teacher: my favorite teacher I’ve ever had. I regularly keep in contact with her over email/snapchat. 10/10
Senior year AP Calc teacher: she was an amazing teacher, and we had a great relationship. I’m not as close with her as my first teacher, but it was still probably pretty good. 8/10
Counselor: hmmm… probably very generic. we have three counselors for, like, ~1,200 kids, so I don’t blame her at all. 5/10
Additional Rec: hahaha, I chose to include a peer recommendation because why not? no one knows you, your personality, your work ethic, etc. better than your friends. 10/10.

— Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Cognitive Science (if offered) or Psychology with a Neuroscience concentration and an English minor.
State (if domestic applicant): TN
School Type: severely underfunded public, lol
Ethnicity: white
Gender: male
Income Bracket: ~$63,000 (my parents are divorced, and I live with my mom)?
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m first generation

— Applied: bates, bowdoin (test optional), colby, connecticut college, grinnell (ED2), middlebury, rhodes, uofmiami, wesleyan (test optional), indiana university, case western reserve
— Will Apply: carleton, kenyon, macalester, oberlin, occidental, union, rochester

— Additional: honestly, I think the only schools to which I’ll be accepted are rhodes, IU-B, and uofmiami, and I’m very okay with that. rhodes is stunningly beautiful, IU-B’s cogsci department is top notch, and umiami’s weather and location can’t be beaten. each school is great in its own way. I’ll be extremely content if I get into just these three. also, although I’ve shown interest in ALL of these schools, I’ve shown extreme interest in grinnell, connecticut college, kenyon, case western reserve, and oberlin. I know I’m not an extremely qualified applicant, but do I stand a chance at at least some of these other school? I’ve been confident up until now. feel a little crappy, lol. thanks for reading this and getting back to me.

I think you have a good shot at all of the schools you listed. Being valedictorian will go a long way at these schools. I’m assuming you’re 18 or 19, and not 23? Hard to tell from the blog that you mentioned.

Otherwise, I think the only downside I see in the profile is a lack of any concrete leadership activity and the lack of any school-related club. The way I’m reading your ECs, it sounds like you’re more of a lone wolf than someone heavily involved at school.

@aoeuidhtns oh, goodness, yes, lol. I’m eighteen. I’ll be nineteen by the time I matriculate. yeah, I was more of a “lone wolf” type of guy, which I hated about myself, haha. I didn’t join any sports at the fear of being bullied (long story short: I’m queer and was heavily ridiculed by much of my school’s male population which, I guess, in turn, led me to becoming a misanthrope), and didn’t really break out of my shell until junior year. but even then, my friends were all from another school, so I guess I actually didn’t break out of my shell until senior year when it was too late to really join anything, lol. thank you for responding!

******* bump?

Did you enter your test grades in when you applied to test optional schools?

Case is definitely a high reach. Your valedictorian title is great, but your AP courseload is very light compared to other applicants. In addition, your ACT score is 25th percentile. You may have a shot at Kenyon, they ALWAYS want committed students (yield rate is really low). You definitely have a good shot at UMiami, so that’s really nice (it’s Florida and close to the beach… DUH)! Your ECs are overall pretty weak and I know you have an explanation, but you’re competing against other top ranked students as well.

@lemonshoot I did, but I didn’t think it mattered as long as I didn’t send them official score reports? perhaps I was wrong.

@ab2002 yeah, that’s why I keep cursing myself, uuuggghhh, haha. my admission officer for kenyon is super nice though, so I speak with him quite often. I’m sending in an extra “Why Kenyon?” essay even though it’s not required, and he said it’s a great idea, so we’ll see what happens! I’m actually choosing to do that for a lot of my schools (grinnell, kenyon, bates, case, conn, etc.). at least I know rhodes, umiami, and iu-b are on my side! lol, thank you for commenting!

@kalons I’m actually friends with a tour guide/student at Kenyon (2020) if you want their email. They have tons of resources and she could give you some further insight.

@ab2002 ahhh! that would be so, so cool!

— Applied: bates, bowdoin (test optional), colby, connecticut college, grinnell (ED2), middlebury, rhodes, uofmiami, wesleyan (test optional), indiana university, case western reserve, uofrochester, AND denison! i applied to denison as a match school… i was also thinking of franklin and marshall, but i don’t want to have to burden my (old) guidance counselor with sending my final reports to the colleges for which it wasn’t uploaded, so i don’t think i will.
— Will Apply: carleton(? i’m second guessing this one), kenyon, macalester, oberlin, occidental, union

I FINISHED!

FINAL LIST: bates, bowdoin, carleton, case western reserve, colby, connecticut college, denison, grinnell, indiana university-bloomington, kenyon, macalester, middlebury, oberlin, rhodes, union, uofmiami, uofrochester, wesleyan.

phew, it’s been a heck of a ride! i’ll see you all in a couple of months! lol

@kalons, good luck, but the ride really just started - strap in as its bound to be an eventful three months!

@Chembiodad ahhh, thank you! this is how i think it will go down:

acceptances: connecticut college, denison, iu-b, rhodes, union, uofmiami
unsure: uofrochester, case western reserve, kenyon, oberlin, grinnell (since i’m ed), and bates
rejections: carleton, bowdoin, colby, macalester, middlebury, and wesleyan

i have an interview with an alumna from uofrochester tomorrow, so hopefully it will go well! i’m super excited.

update: my uofrochester interview was absolutely incredible. she was so, so nice and informative. she expressed how impressed she was with me and my accomplishments, said rochester needs someone like me, and wished me luck, though she said i wouldn’t need it. the interview lasted for about an hour (half an hour longer than anticipated). it really helped to affirm my want to attend.

Hey @kalons ! You commented on my chance me thread a while back and I thought I would return the favor. I don’t know much of these colleges other than the ones I’m also applying to, but I know you will definitely get in somewhere amazing. Liberal arts colleges are really holistic in their processes and you shine throughout your application. Leadership positions aren’t for everyone, and colleges don’t want a homogenous class so that won’t be as detrimental to your application as one might think. You have a lot going for you (especially at the test-optional schools) and don’t forget, a 30 still makes you competitive! I have friends that got into Brown with a 26 and Bowdoin with a less than a 4.0 (they didn’t send their test scores, ACT was 23). Have hope! I’m really excited to see where you’ll get accepted! Please let me know how the process works out and where you end up matriculating!

hi, kind person! thank you so much! i will most definitely keep you (and this thread, haha) up to date with where i am accepted/denied/waitlisted. thank you for the kind words and encouragement! @yellowmellow17
