HFAI is supposedly to break down economic barriers - but does Harvard truly mean it?

New Financial Aid Initiative shows solid 'early' results
More financial aid students admitted

The above article would make it seem as though the Harvard Financial Aid Initative has been a great sucess, more than doubling the number of low income applicants accepted in this year's EA round.

However.. some simple math (data from the article):

(43 low-income EA acceptances) / (885 total EA acceptances)

gives us a paltry 4.8% acceptance rate for low income students!! By way of comparison, the overall acceptance rate of the EA round was approx. 21%!

So what gives? Does Harvard really support low income applicants - or is it more talk than anything else? As a fee-waiver applicant, I'm rather bummed to see these depressing numbers!

You better think through those numbers again.

It was actually 19-20% for low income students. You can't use the total number of EA acceptances to figure the acceptance rate-- go look for how many low income students applied, and then recalculate the acceptance rate.

Wow..

I literally woke up in the middle of the night last night and realized my mistake. Pretty crummy math.. sorry guys! :)
