Hi all, I need some opinions on getting a good "gaming" laptop.

Alright, I have narrowed it down to these laptops

Top gaming notebooks - Top 5 gaming notebooks - CNET Asia

I know its expensive (i think), but my dad said he mite get me a good one that will last me for a really long time, so I don't have to keep going back and buying new ones once the old ones become shi*tty

anyway, I have been looking at the Toshiba Qosmio..i like the design and everything, from what I have read from online sites...lol

my friend has the gateway one, and it looks pretty good...but on that site, it got lower ratings than the toshiba?

the reason i "need" a laptop is that I have a research job in the summer, which, while it doesn't specifically say you need a laptop, it would be better to get one sicne I would be doing a lot of research, lawl

so what are your opinions? Should I get a cheaper one that will just grant me basic stuff? I really want a good gaming laptop to play games such as Counter Strike, Left 4 dead, dawn of war 2, etc, etc

your opinions are appreciated! =D

I am also a junior in highschool so maybe I should wait until the summer before college to get one? my mom just said there will be newer ones?

lol

A good gaming laptop will require a fast processor, lots of memory, and a decent graphics card. A fairly large (15.4"+) screen would also be a plus. Don’t forget a fast internet connection.

If you really want to make it worth your money, do research on the individual bits and pieces out there. Understand exactly what you want. If you want an idea of what to get, look up the specifications of a few Alienware products. They’re pretty good at designing game-oriented hardware.

Remember, your best bet would be to get a fairly cheap, highly upgradeable, laptop. From there, add just what you need. Leaving out Windows Business software, for example, could save you a few bucks.

Also, if you don’t expect to move around a lot, you can upgrade a desktop for cheaper. More power for your cash.

As an added bonus, a gaming laptop will be pretty good at running engineering software. So if you plan on majoring there, you might want to keep that in mind.

ok, i was thinking about gettin the toshiba one…and it got pretty good reviews. hm…i already have a desktop, but i hate staying up late till like 3, 4 in the morning to do hw…when i could be doing hw in bed? haha

and i plan on doing pre med in college…not enginerring. i suck at teh calculus and above! haha

well…one drawback I see to the toshiba’s design is you can’t look at all formal while using it…

If you’re getting it to use while working in an internship I know I would want something that doesn’t have flames painted all over it…

^lol good answer…then maybe i should get the gateway one? its cheaper (about 1500) while the toshiba is 1600…so yea…hm…

or maybe i should just wait?

check out Sager

don’t spend big bucks on a gaming laptop expecting it to be top of the line for more than several years. plus, i really don’t think laptops are meant for gaming. dedicated gaming laptops usually have very poor battery life, very heavy, and prone to overheating.

Personally I’d go with the Gateway. It’s only $1150 at Best Buy, has a 9800 GS and 4 GB of DDR3.

[Dell XPS M1730 Gaming Laptop: Core 2 2.1GHz, 2GB DDR2, 1GB SLI DUAL nVidia 9800M GT, 250GB 7200RPM HDD, DVDRW, WiFi, 17" WUXGA LCD $984 or $954 - SlickDeals.net Forums](http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1351711)

I think if you can wait until next summer, then you should wait.

In addition, I agree with arklogic that laptops really are not meant for gaming. They’re intended to be mobile. Take a look at the one Liquid90 recommended. It has a 17” monitor, a 9 cell battery, and appears to be about twice as thick as my R61 ThinkPad, which as an R-series isn’t the thinnest ThinkPad out there. I love how even Dell’s web site doesn’t tell you how heavy it is! Sure, it’ll run any game you want, but would you want to carry it with you all day long?

Two of the guys on my hall in freshman year had 17" laptops. I never saw either take his laptop outside of the building. It’s not so heavy that you can’t take it with you to someone else’s room, but you do not want to take it with you for a day’s worth of classes.

hm k you guys make good points

i’ll think i’ll wait unless my internship needs it

…alienware

alienware is too expensive and it sucks…from what i have heard

and i’m not too much a fan of dell since it owns alienware…so thats out of the question (dell does own alienware right? correct me if i’m wrong)

anyway…i might go with an asus or a toshiba…not sure though

Can it play Half-Life 2?

Can it play Oblivion?

Can it play Crysis?

If so… then it should be able to run most games. Just my £0.02. :)

w8 which laptop can play those games? haha

i currently have an hp destop (vista) which i do all my crap on…i don’t really play that much fps games, like cs, half life, and uh other stuff…but thats because this comp makes everything laggy…

this desktop is a widescreen and i got it after my old sony computer (xp), which used to play everything really good without any lag at all…idk wuts going on…so basically i just use this desktop for work and the occasional addictinggames, guild wars, dawn of war2, etc…

Or, you could get a reasonably good laptop, but then spend the money you save on a console (the 360 is going really cheaply nowadays). Nowadays, there aren’t that many great games coming out for the PC anyway, IMO.

Up to you, though. Have fun choosing -wishes it were her-

i have a ps3 and a 360…lol

ps3 i got free in a contest…so yea…

and good point, not a lot of good games…maybe WoW, hahahaha jk idk

^Oblivion is a great fantasy RPG; it’s out for the Xbox, too, but if you get it on the PC you can download all these cool mods that make the game twice as good. I wasted hundreds of hours on that game, and it’s not even online :)

Hmm… which console games do you already have? You could pick up some new ones. I personally recommend the usual: Halo 3, Gears of War 1 and 2, Mass Effect, etc.

nah not into oblivion, lol…i only play online games for PC…anything else is a waste imo

well i have halo 3, assassins creed, gta 4, mgs4, lbp, gears of war 1, cod4, 5 (cod waw my brother’s friend gave it to him to borrow and we gave him mirror’s edge but we havent given it back to each other for like 4 weeks now…) uh and other stuff lol…oh yea fable 2, some other stuff
