Hi, I'm here to help with any questions ...

How safe do you feel on campus?

I dont remember if your were a guy or not, but if you are how safe do most of your girl friends feel on campus?

Im from a rural and extremely safe part of virginia... BTW

I'm a sophomore.. Here are my observations:

1) If its very late (after 2am) and you are on the fringes of campus.. it is possible to get mugged. Travelling in a group at late hours is a good idea
2) The georgiatech policy patrol the campus 24x7... and you can get instant assistance by calling them. They maintain a good presence.. and you'll seem them often when walking at night..
3) There are emergency beacons in isolated areas on campus. You push the emergency button and you'll be connected to a dispatcher right away..

GeorgiaTech is the center of the city.. and cities generally have higher crimme rates. Taking some precautions do help. the georgiatech police does do a good job by picking suspicious people.

If you are a girl.. Try avoiding traveling alone after 1 or 2am. Till about midnight.. the campus will be up and about.. But after that you'll see lesser and lesser people. If you are traveling alone.. try avoiding the fringes and travel from inside of campus.

Getting a 0.72 gpa is extremely rare.. So don't let that freak you out
Remember.. college is different from high school. You will need to practise calc every day to be good at it.. you can't leave it for the weekends unless you are really smart.

It is easy to maintain a 3.0+ gpa freshman year... unless you are a real slacker.. To maintain a good gpa as you move on... you might want to take lesser hours and do summer school.

Just because his major is bme doesn't automatically make him pre-med.

Right. My point was that if he's in BME he's probably not in pre-med. Perhaps I'm a retard, but it makes sense to me.

I have been admitted as an Applied Math major. How well ranked is Gatech's Math major? I know their standards are really high, but I just want to be sure I can enjoy an education right up with the best there. To put it this way, is their Math major as prestigious as their Computer Sci major?

No, I am not pre-med.

And actually, there are a handful of BME pre-med students so it's a completely valid question.

I know a few math majors and they seem to really enjoy it. Math of course is not as prestigious as some of the engineering fields here at tech, but it is still very difficult and challenging.

I am a girl and I have to say I have never felt unsafe on campus. You have to use common sense since you are in the city. Don't walk around at night by yourself- call the stingerette. They are a free taxi-like service for gatech students and will take you anywhere on campus. They run till 2am. If you want to travel after 2am walk with a friend and dont walk on the outskirts of campus. Also, if you are from a rural area and want to avoid some of the beggers and perhaps thieves that sometimes find their way onto east campus, live on west. West is very quiet and safe.

greymatter:

I am considering the BME major. How are the professors? Can you go to them for extra help? Also, what is the work load?

On a different note... I'm quite curious about the no car policy for first year students. Do students simply just park outside campus, or do they survive on bikes? Not having a car around seems scary :p

Thanx in advance for the help :)

HAVING a car in Atlanta sounds scary to me, but I'm not from there!

My son and his girlfriend seem to manage pretty well without a car or bikes. They take MARTA to Atlantic Station regularly for shopping and dinners. They took a cab once to go to a fancy dinner and the symphony, then were able to take MARTA back to within walking distance of campus. They know a few upperclassmen with cars who have helped with transportation for group activities off campus.

While it is useful to know someone with a car, it's not much of a neccessity to get around the campus.
When it comes to going out and doing things, MARTA is admirably adequate in providing transportation around the hot spots in Atlanta.
In addition to MARTA, a new rail network that would link the major educational institutions (while also providing transport to places like Atlantic Station) is in the pipeline.

Hey gt08!! I just wanted to know if GTech's campus is safe. After all, its in the heart of Atlanta.

Hmm... why are you scaring people... point is if you are willing to work hard, doing well in Gatech should not be a problem.

Proof: My brother, currently maintaining a GPA of 3.5 + in his first year. He's a Comp. Sci major.

san777,
The GT campus is appreciably safe, considering its location.
The police department cars are frequently seen around campus and as long as you stay away from North Avenue at unreasonable times of the night, you should be fine.
There are a number of suitable late-night safety services available for students such as the Stingerette and personal police drop-offs, so a late night trip from whereever, should be no problem.
As long as you practice common-sense safety procedures (like closing doors behind you or not leaving them open, while moving in), you will be perfectly safe.

Pulchritude6 has summarized it well: working hard in Georgia Tech should deliver to you the grade that you want.
It is simply advisable to keep in mind that the level of work that's considered "working hard" is different for college and HS, different for diff. people (based on their intellect), and different for different majors.

my title says it all. i know it sounds like a stupid question but i have a legitimate reason for asking this. I just found out yesterday that ive been given guaranteed transfer option from cornell u. In order for it to be guaranteed, i need to get a minimum of 3.3 gpa w/o any grades below a C. I was also given required courses i need to take, and they are primarily centered around liberal arts (economics). Could you give me info on how easy it is to get the grades at GT liberal arts, assuming you know people who fall in wide spectrum of academic achievements (underachievers who make the grades, overachievers who don't make the grades, etc)? thanks in advance.

tazerfuzz,

That isn't an easy question to answer.
If your classes are primarily centered around the liberal arts (at GT) and you are intelligent and dilligent enough for an Ivy League school to consider you, then you should be able to get the GPA that you want, with a certain amount of work.

tazerfuzz, of the few people I know who were offered Guaranteed Transfer at Cornell, none of them actually ended up transferring there. Usually they liked where they were first year and just stayed on. In another case, he got off the waitlist in June of a school higher on his list. And I've read on CC of people who ended up not meeting the complex transfer rules Cornell requires for coursework. Some things to think about for how you decide where to enroll.

gt08, I appreciate your response to my ambiguous question.

hey,
how hard/easy is it to change from like College of Sciences to engineering?
Thanks.
