"Hidden" Extracurriculars--What are Yours?

I’m part of an online community that involves sending and receiving postcards to/from people all around the world. I’ve sent and received about 50 cards each way so far.

But I wrote my common app essay on this so I guess I did report it :)

Consmption of human meat is my favorite hobby. Does that count as a hidden extracurricular activity?

I’m the first person in school to clear the campaign mode of Starcraft II without using cheat codes.

I sew costumes and make props for cosplay/costume recreation on a competitive level. I run around in conventions with a face full of make up, wigs, and theatrical lenses and all.

-I roleplay often, usually in literate/advanced literate communities. I’m and admin/mod in a lot of forums.
-I have read almost all of Dostoevsky’s books (all I have left is The Idiot and The Possessed) I’ve also read Anna Karenina along with Life and Fate for fun. Twice.
-Learning German and Russian in my spare time
-I have a blog about philosophy and history, with the occasional post about current events/politics.
-I frequently write fanfiction. They’re usually chocked full of theories and most are Alternate History(which is what happens when you like Hetalia too much.)

read bible, which is supposedly the greatest piece of human literature produced.

Music is my favorite thing in the world. I have spent tons and tons of hours on playing all sorts of instruments, viola, guitar, drums, keyboard, drums, and composing electronic music. I spend approximately 20 hours outside of school on music. I am also in orchestra and will be for all four years, I finished music theory and electronic music and will take AP music theory. I have volunteered at old age homes, and done some live performances (nothing big, 2-3 performances at things like talent shows). I will perform at NYSSMA next year for viola with a level 5 piece of music and will be graded on skill for this piece of music. I take private lessons for guitar as well. How good are these as extra curricular activities because other than the music I only do football and wrestling and have a summer job?

Umm, I’m usually a girly girl, but one of my passions/hobbies is reading books about military history and strategy, especially WWII and Israeli wars. Could I write that, or would it be too weird?

@jasonInNy …If you read the entire bible then I take it you’re either very devout or else an atheist

I can juggle, so I guess that is my hidden talent :D. I also bake cupcakes and decorate them with animal faces, and I like to rescue lost dogs and find their owners.

I bake! Specifically cookies. During any party with my friends, I bring the nutella chocolate chip cookies!

soooooo… I can put down origami? :D

Guys I’m really good at procrastinating.

I build and modify nerf and airsoft guns. Even morphed it into a business.

does playing an online game count?

My dad and I cut down trees, mill the rough cut lumber which I make into mission style furniture and cabinets. To date I have sold about $3000 of solid oak and cherry coffee and end tables. I probably spend a couple hundred hours a year in this hobby. I even designed and built a mission end table with a built in whole house air filtration system ( particulate, charcoal, hepa filters)…my dad warns me to love my hobby, just don’t ruin it by making it my profession :). I’ve been thinking of listing this in my EC’s. I wish I could include some pictures of my work so a college could understand the mix of skill and design functionality. But then again if I go for bio or bio-chem who cares?

Do you think playing ridiculous amounts of ping pong after school with me, my sister, or my friends could be considered a personal EC?

@ParthivNaresh yes.

One of my “hidden EC’s” is a NASPA-sanctioned Scrabble club I’ve been a part of since 7th grade. It’s not part of a school or anything.

Does anyone else think 95% of this thread is crazy?

Reading - I promise you, everyone else applying to college can also read.
Video games - Go actually do something.
Fantasy sports - See video games.
Anything online - See fantasy sports.

Ask yourselves if literally anyone could easily do your “Hidden” Extracurricular, and that will tell you if you should put it on your app. Just enough of these are creative and unique that I’ve convinced myself (barely) that you all aren’t being sarcastic.

Here’s my list (copy pasted from my resume) -
Going to the bathroom: I spend up to 30 minutes every day in the bathroom, it has become a very enjoyable EC for me and I like to read Agatha Christie novels while participating in this EC.
Read every Agatha Christie novel: I am literate. While enjoying a different EC of mine I like to read Agatha Christie novels for up to 30 minutes every day.
Cooking: In my pursuit to read every Agatha Christie novel I needed to spend more time doing EC #1. I am quite the chef when it comes to PB&J sandwiches.
Runescape: Now that I am done with all of Agatha Christie’s novels, I needed something to do while I go to the bathroom. Thankfully, my loving parents installed a toilet where my desk chair was so I am able to train my level 5409 Mage WHILE producing excrement. This has brought my participation time in EC #1 up to a whole new level.

@ HSClass2013 - I hope you aren’t referring to ping pong as a “fantasy sport”. It is in the Olympics after all.
