Thank you so much!!! Iā€™ve been trying to decide what to put and so far this is what I have:

I am the founder, president, and only member of the Judy Blume Fan Clubā€“Iā€™ve read all of her books and have consistently talked to her through snail mail over the past nine years!
I am a John Hughes and Wes Anderson film enthusiast.
In my free time, I make cookies for local firefighters and policemen.
I am slowly but surely learning French, as well as the last words of the famous and infamous.
I regularly listen to NPRā€™s Planet Money and Morning Edition podcasts.
When I paint, I enjoy emulating Monetā€™s style. I also like to keep up with new works of Dale Chihuly, Roxy Paine, Marlene Dumas, and Shepard Fairey.
On the weekends, I help my dad run his diner, Ramseyā€™s Restaurant.
I maintain a blog on politics, a topic that, along with economics, I am very passionate about.
I have pen pals in various countriesā€“Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Germany, France, Sweden, South Africa, China, Taiwan, and Australia-- and I enjoy keeping in touch with them.

Do you feel like any of this is unnecessary? I really want the admissions officers to see that I am a real person behind the SAT scores, regular extracurriculars, and grades. My essay is pretty good and so are my short responses. I think I might have a chance at an Ivy.

Also, Iā€™m applying as a 15 year old, so I also want to show them that I am just as emotionally mature as I am intellectually mature. Do you think there is another way I can illustrate this?

Thank you so much.

Would fostering dogs and cats be one?

@KingNerdIII- Definitely. My son fostered cats for at least his last couple years of high school. (In fact, he still does during college breaks.) Iā€™ll never know if it helped his college admission odds, but it was a very gratifying activity and certainly appropriate for an application.

my son has a passion for film making. he has taken classes in both school and in the summer and has made films. However, he has never submitted them for festivals or awards. is this still a good extracurricular. He is considering submitting a film to the schools to show what he is working on.

@giantoctopus -This is a good question ā€¦ but on an old thread. So Iā€™ve turned it into an ā€œAsk the Deanā€ column. (See http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/indie-film-making-application-worthy-extracurricular/ ). This allowed greater space for a long reply and also will prevent the response from being obliterated if this ancient thread gets closed.

Thanks so much for your input!!

Flight, if everything goes as planned. After the pandemic slows to a halt, Iā€™m going to join a glider club (I turned 14 in October, and you can solo a glider starting at that age), then hopefully move on to flight school. If all goes well, Iā€™ll go on my first solo plane flight at 16 and get my Private Pilotā€™s License at 17. I just need to make sure that none of this conflicts with academics. My parents are iffy about the safety of small planes, which is what Iā€™ll be flying, but they canā€™t object if it might help my application shine  The entire concept of aviation is simply awesome. Canā€™t wait to start.
