High GPA, good extracurricular, but low SAT. Should I dare to apply to a top notch school?

In details:

GPA: 3.91 (Unweighted)

Extracurriculars: I’m a founder of student organization and 2 science clubs, class chairman, and our council team has one the best the past year. ( Should I consider it a deep extracurricular achievment? )

SAT: A dreadful 1760 ! Over time I’ve developed a horrible test anxiety toward this test, I couldn’t change this.

I’ve worked hard the past years for my aspiration of getting into an Ivy league school but the SAT seems to me as the naysayer in this dream…

Are you a senior, if you aren’t try taking the ACT. However with these stats an Ivy league would be a reach for sure.

Look into some top test optional schools, Wake Forest, Bowdoin, etc, but also apply to some top schools that do require testing as you know never know what they will focus on in their test-optional. Don’t forget that while all of the Ivies are top schools, not all top schools are Ivies!

I forgot to say I’m an international student from Egypt*

Well after my latest experience with the SAT december I don’t think my parents would agree that I do it again. Talking about 2 weeks of depression…

Dammit I got this sh*t too serious!

Maybe its your method of preparing for the SAT. Are you just taking tests? Make sure that you go over every question you miss! Honestly, if you are struggling, I recommend private tutoring. It helped me go from 1860 to 2170. Good luck  Message me for any questions/etc

Your credentials sound very good. There are tons of wonderful schools that would love to have you. Why do you have your heart set on a few that won’t? Too bad your motivation for working hard was to get into one of these 8 schools when your motivation should be to do well and to learn things that will help you live the best life possible. Take a look at the other schools. Most would welcome you with open arms.

Your ECs , while good and fine for most schools, are not at the calibre that would wow IVY admissions. Don’t feel badly. That is true for nearly every student in the world! Consider how many student organizations and science clubs that class chairmans there are in the world. Certainly you are probably among the top performers (in terms of EC) at your school but what about in the world? There are approximately 26,407 public high schools and 10,693 private schools in the United States. I don’t know the number of high school in the world but all the Ivys get international applicants. But not even counting them, the US has about 37,000 high schools. Approximately 13,811 students will be starting in Ivy League schools in the fall.

@lostaccount , could you give me some suggestions of good schools that I may stand a good chance among their applicant pools? (Hint: I’m applying to Universities in the North Eastern and West coast regions)

Some which I should consider as match and reach, yet for reach there are good chances…

Thanks to your advice!

Your GPA is great and so are your extracurriculars. Ivy league is a crapshoot for anybody, but try to raise the SAT score and I think you’ll have a shot. Some of the ivies will take a January score, and practice is all it takes to do well. I’m not particularly smart but I reached a 2330 superscore, so if you need any advice, feel free to ask or visit one of the many great guides on CC. Good luck!

Since you are an International student from Egypt (and if you are middle eastern you are considered white, so no URM) AND with a 1760 SAT, you are kind of screwed. So try taking the ACT because of its science section, and try to go in with low stress.

Thanks for your care! Unfortunately I won’t be able to take the SAT stress anymore so I’ll just get over it and maybe transfer later to a top notch school (Maybe the redesigned SAT will better suit my thinking and I’ll try the ACT - but I’ll not stress out myself as I was doing.)

I posted a new discussion thread for picking my reach schools, please give me your opinions !

@londondad , I’m applying in the Northeastern and West Coast regions,Could you suggest any of these test optional for internationals? I’m only looking for Universities.
