I just have a basic question that anybody can answer: I wanted to know if a high GRE score and high GRE Subject Test score could help overshadow a low GPA (like between a 2.7-2.9). Any and all responses or opinions are welcome. Thank you.
In the words of Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock - “It takes two to make a thing go right. It takes two to make it out of sight!” GRE AND grages are important. Grades are a reflection of a 4 year experience. They are very important. Of course a high GRE helps but GPA is very important to grad schools.
If this is math we are talking about, it might be possible to do really well in analysis and algebra, get a strong letter of recommendation from those professors, and get admitted to a mid-tier program even with a spotty record up to that point.
I don’t think strong subject GRE will make up for B’s and C’s in your major courses.
@JWilliamsonIII If you are applying to a math or CS program for grad school, I don’t think the GRE will offset a poor GPA (especially since it is essentially a high-school level test). GRE subject test, maybe. Letters of recommendation are often more important.
But keep in mind that many graduate programs require a 3.0 GPA to be considered, so try to get your GPA within that range.
