My junior son has a 1940 SAT but his GPA is only about 2.0 He has ADHD and struggles with Executive function. He wants to go to college and study some form of computer degree. In contrast to all of his other grades, he has a 104% in Computer Science. He tests well, but homework completion and writing are issues. Is there any college that might take him? We leave on the East Coast and are hoping to find something nearby.

Try the college finder on “collegeboard.org”. You’ll definately be able to find a college with 100% acceptance on the east coast.

Did DS receive high SAT score due to extended time? Is GPA improving, or holding steady? Is he much stronger in STEM than humanities? Is DS’ school especially rigorous? CC posters have commented on schools’ concern about “unbalanced SAT/GPA” applicants, so don’t put too much weight on relatively strong SAT score. Aim for schools w/median in 500/500 range, that offer CS, that have relatively strong student support services, then speak to each admission office to feel out reception for DS’ SAT/GPA situation. That should give you any idea whether you should aim higher, or lower, to community college (at least for first year).

If you look at school rankings, by the time you’re in the 150th ranked school range, you’ll find some schools that may be interested in a “late bloomer” with strongish SAT scores. Try to frame a narrative re: low GPA for him. (Do you have a neuro-psych evaluation to establish whether there are any learning disabilities?)
