So recently I've been looking at a lot of chance threads and noticed many mention they go to a competitive high school. What defines this and how do they know if it's competitive or not?

Also, how does this play towards college admissions? I know grade inflation / deflation CAN be determined by class rank (I.E. a number one ranked student with a low GPA) but in terms of competition, how and why does it matter?

For public schools, some states rank them. So while competitiveness is a subjective evaluation, the CCers here probably mean that their school rank is closer to 1 than 1000.

At Marist College the admission actually use their own system to see how competitive a school. High schools send colleges the courses that are available and a mini description to info the college admission rep about the school. Some college how you are ranked at your school is very important for them, but at Marist College the admission office is looking for well rounded student. This means that they look at your grades yes, but also at what you did over the four years of high school. This means that clubs you have joined and how active you were. Each college is going to have a different process on how your grades weighs in the whole process. Hope that was helpful!
