High School Parents/Students - Class of 2008

I think the key to the stubble issue is --he should present a neat, pulled-together appearance. If he can do that without shaving, it's probably OK.

It has been said that an actor should look at an audition as a job interview. You don't wear a tux, but you don't wear jeans either. If you'd shave for a job interview, shave for the audition. In the end your performance is what will matter. Blow them out of the water and they won't care what you wore.

I too am the parent of a rising senior who after reading all of the posts for the class of 2008 am feeling even more overwhelmed. But, I also feel that I have learned a lot as well, so thank you! My D while she would prefer to be in a MT program, is a grad of CCM's certificate acting program, and would be perfectly fine with becoming a straight theatre major at some of her school choices. She realizes how competetive it will be. We have heard that sometimes students are told to auditon for acting if at the audition, they have acting promise, but are not going to be accepted into the MT program. So is it better then to apply to MT only or apply for both MT and acting?

I think it's safe to say that will vary according to the school. For example, my D auditioned at CMU in the MT area, but was accepted into the acting program. Some schools will allow you to apply to both programs with one audition, others have different auditions for each division. Since it is so competitive, why limit your options? Apply for both whenever possible.

Thanks, since I'm new to this discussion board, can you tell me why it lists me as invisible and what does that mean?

UAMom....welcome. Where do you see something that lists you as invisible? I don't know of anything like that on College Confidential. In any case, I see ya right here, LOL. Can you explain where it says anything about "invisible"?

Maybe it is just when I am online. There is a red dot in the bottom left hand corner where my name is. Everyone else has a CC icon. But I'm glad that you can see me as I think I'll be needing all the help/support we can get over the next 9 months! Thanks!

UAmom....I've been on CC for five years and I am not sure I even understand the icons, LOL. But just to tell you what I can see.....under my OWN name, there is a red dot. I'm not sure what the red dot signifies. Maybe someone else can say. But I think it appears under our own names when we are signed on. Under others' names, there is the CC icon. I think that icon turns yellow when that poster is signed on. So, anyway, you ARE visible to the rest of us. I don't see a red dot under your name. Only you see that, I believe. If anyone else knows something else about these icons, they can chime in. But I shared what I think appears. I'm signed on an hour after you posted this AM. I can see you are not on CC right now as your CC icon under your name appears white. The red dot is only under my own name (as you saw for yourself under your own name).

Thanks, sorry to get off topic - I don't want to waste anyone's time! We are off to NYC this week to visit NYU and possible Fordham. Any suggestions on what not to miss or see while we are there?

Hi UAmom!~My husband and I loved this...take the subway uptown to the westside of Central Park and get off at 96th...head into the park and then south until you reach the southern end (I think that's around 59th/Columbus Circle). You'll walk by the the reservoir (incredible view of the city there), castle, turtle pond, merry-go-round, softball fields...the park is beautiful this time of year and such a refreshing change from the fun/craziness of NYC. We also visited the Whitney Museum with our S where they have an exhibit called "The Psychedelic Era"...it was fun experiencing that with him (and re-living the fringe of the 60's). :)

Hi and thanks for the tips. We're excited to go there tomorrow!

Does anyone know when the Syracuse auditons were last year? They aren't posting this years until Sept. 15. I am guessing they will be the same weekends as last year, so at least we could have an idea. It is such a puzzle trying to fit everything in - I guess we will survive it!

UAmom, my D (who is also a rising senior) and I visited SU last year in late October, and some kids were auditioning for MT and acting then. They seemed to schedule those first auditions on something called Fall Visiting Days. I think the date last year was October 20, if that's any help. Like you, we wish SU would put its dates up now, because fitting all these dates into some kind of coherent schedule is, indeed, like putting together a confusing puzzle. It would be nice to have at least a timeframe in mind ....

Like NMR says, there are some Fall Visiting Days when some kids can audition on campus. I can give you the ON CAMPUS audition dates from 2004-2005 and maybe this gives you some inkling as to the time frames if they do similarly this year:
Dec. 3
Jan. 21
Jan. 22
Jan. 28
My D auditioned Jan. 28 that year.

Last year, one of my clients had an audition set up for SU in NYC on Jan. 2 and so there is the option of their NYC audition dates. She did not end up going as she got in Tisch ED.

It definitely is like fitting together a puzzle. However, from my personal experience, it was not necessary to have that puzzle in place by August. If you schedule auditions, generally speaking, by the end of Sept., you should be able to get your first choice dates at most schools. We got all of our first choices and I believe for the schools that allow you to call or set it up prior to filing an app, we did that the first week of Oct. (but NYU doesn't let you until Nov. 1, and CMU's online method didn't go up so until then anyway), and got all of our first choice dates. So, I bet you will have all the audition date options in hand by early Sept. and can schedule by the end of the month and get what you hope for, at MOST schools.

My D is concerned about having her first auditions at the schools she is most interested in attending. But the other side is what about schools with rolling admissions ie Michigan. Would it be more advantageous to audition earlier rather than later for that program?

My advice is to not audition at your favorite school or two first. Many feel that they get better as their auditions go on or they may make some changes after the first one, etc. Some feel having one or more under your belt before going for your top choice has been beneficial.

At UMich, there truly is not a benefit to auditioning in the fall or the earliest dates. They really admit students from all audition dates. They are not willing to fill the class after the first couple of auditions and want to see them all. They will admit some after the earlier dates but then hold onto others they are still considering until they can complete more auditions. I think if you audition there by Feb., you shouldn't have any disadvantage based on the date. However, it is important to get the application in sooner rather than later as it is rolling and you have to be invited to audition in order to secure an audition date. Thus filing the app by early October is a good idea at UMich.

When my own daughter applied to UMich, she got her first choice audition date in January by filing her app by the first week in October. It was one of her favorite programs and it was her second audition. She made sure to do another one first. In her case, the two programs she had the least success with happened to be her first two auditions. It varies for all people, so take with a grain of salt.

Haven't heard the Syracuse dates, but they usually do the October auditions during the run of the first musical --which runs the first two weekends of the month.

Can anyone name a few good "safety" schools with a BA in MT and or theatre? My D's list is long right now but she only has 1 non-audtion school and I would like to add at least one more for options if needed. We live in Ohio so would prefer East of the Mississippi.

Muhlenberg is a "safety" as to MT since it is a non-audition BA program. There is an optional audition for talent scholarship purposes. It is a very well regarded BA theatre program with very strong dance and music departments. It also is affiliated with an on campus equity and non-equity professional summer stock company that students are welcomed to audition for. Whether it is a "safety" as to academic acceptance is another question. It is a selective small LAC with a great academic reputation. Whether it is a safety in this regard really depends on where your kid's GPA, SAT's EC's and recs fall compared to other applicants; however, Muhlenberg also has an SAT optional procedure under which in lieu of the SAT you can submit a graded paper from 11th grade or something like that. See the website for more details on this and for the freshman student profile to get a better handle on how your student would stack up against other applicants.

I believe Ouchita (sp?) Baptist University in Arkansas is non-audition for admission, but there is an audition for scholarship consideration. That would be west of the Mississippi, though.

UAMom,

Take a look at Ball State's theatre studies major, the University of Akron's BA in theatre, and Western KY University's BA program. These schools are relatively close to you and might be good options for safety schools for your D. I'm sure you are aware that NKU might also be an option. I'm not sure if you got my e-mail a couple of weeks ago. (If you did, I hope it didn't overwhelm you!) I do want to reiterate that I would be happy to help in any way I can. Is your D still planning on auditioning for a mix of MT and straight theatre programs?
