High School Parents/Students - Class of 2008

Welcome MontrealMom!~A wonderful poster to this forum, MichaelNKat, has graciously agreed to share the spreadsheets he developed when helping his D last year. I'm sure if you sent him a PM he would help you out by either emailing them to you or walking you through how to set them up. We have a copy of the one he sent us a while ago taped to the wall in front of our computer...a visible reminder of where my S is in the process. I update it on our computer (and on the wall!) as things get done...I love that the blanks are getting filled in! :)

Gem-You can say that again. Our progress table is posted on the frig. At the beginning, this all was a bit overwhelming when someone on this forum said,
"Start your engines". Little by little things are getting done--Still a LONG way to go....

He has shared them and they are fabulous! What a wonderful group of people you are. Thanks for helping me find my way in...

hi everyone!
i am a senior in high school and getting ready to start the audition process. I applying to 10 school and am feeling a little overwhelmed! i am a little disorganized and i was wondering if anyone had any advice or ways that kept them organized during this crazy process?? if so and you could pass them along, it would be great! thanks so much!
casey

casey!! welcome to CC - glad you are finally using the boards... Organization-wise, you could keep an accordian-style notebook thing w/ a slot for each school... anytime you get sent something from them put it in there... and make a chart of what you need to do application-wise, and what is required at the audition for each school. Read on and you'll find more info. And BW MT is amazing!

Can anyone provide information on how the NYU audition timing works. Are you there for 1/2 the day or just a little while? We are trying to set up our auditions and any info/advice on doing this is appreciated. My D will be going to the unifieds in NYC. Thanks!

How long you are there partly depends on where you are in the lineup, how early you signed up for an audition. Although my D signed up early, they "lost" her info, and after I called and they resolved it, (because I had copies of all the e-mails records confirming the audition appt, etc.) they put her at the end of the list. My daughter was last in the room, and we were there much longer than those who go first. It was 3 hours vs. 1 1/2, say. But I don't think you know what order you are in until after you arrive for the audition.

does anyone know anything about the MT program at North Central College? I know it's not a school listed on the CC MT major list but my S is interested and I was trying to get information. The school web site looks good and the city of Naperville looks to be a quaint city/town with deep roots in the arts. I know it's about a 30 minute train ride from Chicago which is great! We are just trying to get some information about the school/program outside of calling the school and asking. Maybe there is someone who lives in or near the area that could help.

bump for legal_blonde

So, HOW ARE WE ALL COMING!?

Who's submitted what?
Is the audition material already chosen?
Aud. Dates Scheduled?
Essays written?

Just a general check up for all of us '08ers?

I, right now, am focusing 100% on finishing my paperwork for applications.
The essays are all in drafts, Forms are filled out, and I have plans to be done with all applications by the end of this week.
I will then schedule auditions, and give myself completely to finding and perfecting material.
I've already developed rough ideas of my material, and have been reading plays and listening to all I can get my hands on for about 10 months now.. so I have big lists of prospectives.. but nothing limited down yet.
By the end of this month, I will have my choices.
Then, I'll have nearly all november to prepare them.. and my first few test auditions in through there before Unifieds.

It's great to say, finally, that I FEEL UNDER CONTROL!
Hooray!

syrso2yrsago~Your post made me smile! You sound determined, organized and on your way...keep the energy going! :)

And syrso2yrsago: How are the ' rents taking all this? I recall some trepidation and concern on your part as to their level of support a while ago.

And where are the apps going? Just curious!

MikksMom

Gem, Thank you thank you thank you!
With Every day comes a new struggle..

Mikksmom, oh what a story that is!
So, as you may remember, at first, my parents were incredibly unwilling to allow me to leave home for the first two years of college, and had very very little faith in my decision. I literally spent nearly every night this past June in tears because of their disapproval. I finally came to say, as much as it hurt me to do so, That I was going to go to a REAL college, for what I want to do, with, or without their help. That I'd dislike it very much to have to go against their wishes and would love their support.. but that if I didn't have it.. they weren't going to stop me. They were.. to say the least.. shocked, and not well receiving of this. I got a job this summer, and have worked my BEHIND off saving. I have spent not 1$ of all of my earnings. The day I reached the total amount necessary to pay for application and travel fees, I simply let them know that night at dinner. To this my father goes "Oh. Don't worry about that. We'll pay for it." As if it were a total non-issue. They did it to test me. To see if I really had the drive and dedication, or if I'd fail at the first challenge I faced. I am BEYOND thankful this happened.. despite the absolute HEARTBREAK I went through in coming to my decision, and then actually GETTING the guts to say that to them. I really was too naive before to know what I was getting into, but now, I feel prepared, and now, I'm ahead of the game, and most importantly of all, I'm sure of myself.

As for the applications.. The list has come to be:
UMich
CMU
Ithaca
Pace
BoCo
PSU
SU
Fredonia
and Otterbein.

And the essays are another issue in entirety.. because they have just... not come to be. But it's okay. I know they're supposed to take time. I'm just going to be SO relieved when this stress is lifted, and I CANNOT wait for that to happen.

Thanks again guys. As infrequent of a poster that I may be, you all have helped a TON.

Keep plugging away on those essays...it is a lot of work.

Keep reading and setting your goals....you will do well!

:) MikksMom

I have been reading the various posts but have not seen any information concerning what the interview portion of the auditions might be like, what questions do they ask etc. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

The interview vary widely, so it's pretty hard to prepare for them. Some schools don't do any at all. At a bare minimum, you should be very familiar with your material in case you are asked about plots, authors, characters, etc. My D was asked why she chose a particular monologue, what was that character's background and motivation, etc.

There are other people on the board who are more knowledgable about this, but my guess is the interviewers want to connect with you personally -- so just be yourself.

Hi everyone I am new to cc and I also a proud mom of a HS senior. I am starting the process[ last minute, s wasn't sure what he wanted to do, then I over heard him tell his friends he was going to be a starving actor for a living, I jumped up in the air and then started research and found you guys!] In my research I stumbled upon this great little school that I haven't heard much about Westminster Choir College. We are also looking into other schools such as cmu, point park, elon, etc but we still keep coming back to Westminster and......It's only an 1hr and 45min away from home!!!!! It is also quick train ride to nyc phila and dc. We are planning our visit for end of nov. We are putting all of our eggs in one basket and we will visit apply and audition for other schools but we just love this one.

There was some discussion a few months ago about Westminster; if you do a search you should be able to locate that thread.

I do want to caution you about having your heart set on just one school; I don't know anything about the auditions at Westminster, but the rate of acceptance in these programs is generally so low that it's very important to have others schools in your sights. This has nothing at all to do with your son's talents! Just be sure that you find some other schools that he would be happy with. And good luck!

Ibelieve - I answered your post on another thread, but let us know when you are visiting and I will alert my d. I only wish WCC was that close for us! The travel is the only thing to complain about so far!

onstage....Thank-you for the caution,we are looking elsewhere but we can't help having a favorite.
