When your son/daughter goes to another state for 4 yrs, do they get a new driver's llicense in that state? Also do they register to vote in that state?

My kids still use their driver's license from our state. For now, both are registered to vote in our state (can vote by absentee ballot). One of my kids has a car at school. Both go to school out of state.

I kept my NH driver license and voted in NH (absentee ballot) through college (even though I was at school in NY state). I believe that students can elect to vote in the state in which they are enrolled AND still keep their driver license for their home state. This may vary from state to state, however.

All students can keep their home state drivers licenses and voters registrations because the prsumption is that you are a part-time school year resident of the state where your school is located and that your domicile remains in your home state. Students can elect to change their legal residence to the state where their school is located but there are hoops that you must jump through, which can vary from state to state, to establish that you have changed your residency on a permenant basis.

Thanks Soozie and Kat. I wasn't sure how state law worked. I know sometimes they say if you live in a state 3 months you need to get their license but I also figured they had some exception for college students.

This is my daughter's first time voting and she wants the "poll" experience.

My first voting experience was a Presidential election when I was a freshman at college. My roommate (from my town) and I made the nearly 3 hour drive home just to vote and then drove back the same day. Great memory...

I had to vote absentee in my first election in college (upstate NY to NH too long a drive) -- It was still exciting to do the absentee ballot, but -- my first election where I got to go to the polls was definitely more exciting!! -- well I guess I should say my second election -- when I was in elementary school I got to "vote" for Jimmy Carter in my school gymnasium when they were teaching us about voting... :)
