High School Qualifications

I am currently a HS freshman, which means I have a little while before I have to get down to business with colleges. I know I want to pursue a BA or BFA in theatre, but my concern is this: I only just realized that I want to do this seriously, and it is too late in the year to join any theatre extra-curriculars.

As a sophomore next year, I plan on fully immersing myself in theatre, of course. However, will it hurt me in college admissions (especially in non audition BA programs) that I didn't do any theatre EC's my freshman year?

I asked this same question on a specific schools forum, but I didn't get a response and would greatly appreciate a more general feedback. Thanks!! :)

You have plenty of time. If you read through these forums I think you’ll see over and over again that at audition schools it’s all about the audition. Not having done theater in 9th grade will not hurt you one bit but keep your grades up, work on your skills, and start performing as soon as you can. You’re ahead of the game by even thinking about this now. Good luck!

Look into some summer programs in your area. Do you have any community theatres and do they offer a summer camp? Maybe you can take the summer to take some dance classes (for posture, movement, body awareness), voice lessons (a lot of acting programs even require you to sing at the audition). If none of those are available to you then go to the library and check out plays! Good luck and keep your grades up!

You are perfectly fine. I didn’t realize I wanted to do this until AFTER sophomore year. And then my first play wasn’t until the winter of my junior year. So basically I had a year of shows in auditions, and I got into the schools I applied to. You’re in great shape.
