Hi,
I’m looking for advice about my schedule for 11th and 12th grade.
These are the High School level classes (on my transcript) that I’ve already taken:
(1st semester grade/2nd semester grade)
6th Grade:
Spanish 1 (A/B)
7th Grade:
Spanish 2 (B/B)
8th Grade:
Honors Spanish 3 (A/A)
Algebra 1 (A/A)
9th Grade:
Honors Spanish 4 (A/B)
Honors Geometry (A/A)
Honors Algebra 2 (A/A) (i chose to take this early to be more challenged)
Honors English 9 (A/A)
AP US Government (A/A)
Honors Biology (A/A)
Choir (A/A)
10th Grade:
Honors Spanish 5 (B)
Honors Precalculus (A)
Honors English 10 (A)
AP US History (A)
Honors Chemistry (A)
PE (A)
Choir (A)
I do well in all of my classes, but I struggle the most in Spanish. I really would like to avoid taking another year of it, but I’m worried about how colleges would view my choice to quit Spanish. I am planning on applying to more competitive schools. Should I take AP Spanish LC?
These are the classes I am planning on taking the next two years:
11th Grade:
AP Spanish LC (maybe)
AP BC Calculus
IB English HL
Honors Modern World History
IB Chemistry SL
AP Psychology
Choir
12th Grade:
AP Statistics
IB English HL
IB Environmental Systems SL
AP Comparative Government
Choir
Internship (our school lets us leave early to have an internship at a nearby company)
Another worry of mine is the mix of IB and AP classes. My school offers both, so it isn’t uncommon to mix them, but usually students take a more even mix of them. Is 3 IB classes enough? What are other good IB classes I could take?
Thanks!
At my school if you take an AP or IB science class (except for AP Physics) you aren’t required to take physics.
Depending upon the colleges you are targeting, they may have HS “suggestions” which go beyond what your HS requires. If you are targeting one of them, particularly since you are not pursuing IBDP, physics is expected, certainly when opting for IB Environmental Science in its stead.
For Spanish, if you don;t want to continue, don’t. 5 years exceeds every college’s recommendation.
Are you considering a STEM major? I agree that I’d absolutely substitute some level of Physics for IB Environmental if you are going to be required to take Physics for your major in college. You’ll want the foundation - even leaving aside acceptances. Especially as you’re not taking any science to HL. Your science right now looks light.
1° you don’t need to take AP Spanish
2° you do need to take Physics, even if regular/honors and not AP/IB, either junior or senior year (I’d suggest Physics jr year, ESS sr year if you’re aiming at a Social Science major, and IB Chem jr year/Physics Honors if you’re aiming for a STEM major)
11th Grade:
AP Spanish LC (maybe)=> an IB Humanities or Social Science class
AP BC Calculus
IB English HL
Honors Modern World History => can’t you take the IB version?
IB Chemistry SL => see above
AP Psychology*
Choir
12th Grade:
AP Statistics
IB English HL
IB Environmental Systems SL
AP Comparative Government => would typically be Comp AND US Gov*
Choir
Internship
To make the schedule more rigorous, you could take AP Comp/Gov jr year and IB Philosophy senior year if your school allows it.
