High School Student Thinking About Ivies

@skompella9892 “By telling her that it’s impossible it likely keeps her from working hard to try and get into Brown, which can affect her ability to get into other, less prestigious schools.”

She asked “What Are The Chances Are Me (Average Student) Get Into Brown?”

With her GPA and test scores and lack of some incredible hook, her chances are near impossible.

In an adult world misleading people even for their own “theoretical” good is a disservice and patronizing.

I have enough respect for the OP to assume she will work diligently to create the best outcomes possible given her circumstances, history and ability. Good luck OP!

I definitely see all of your guys’ points. She should apply as a high reach school and look at other target schools that you guys mentioned earlier. But the OP should work really hard to improve her stats to have a small chance.

Near impossible is not impossible. She still has a chance although a very, very slim one. She should work as hard as possible (but not at the expense of mental health) and apply if she feels like she has a chance after improving her stats, but she shouldn’t expect to be admitted.

@skompella9892 : yes, absolutely impossible. The colleges listed above are both targets and reaches already.
Admission to universities such as Brown, Stanford, Pomona, Wellesley… aren’t just a matter of “improving stats” or even “excellent stats”. Please read results threads.
I agree OP should work hard so that she can attend a 4-year college, as her current GPA indicates she’s capable of. It also means making sure she has 3 years of a foreign language, both bio+chem but also an additional science (which may be APES), 4 years of English, 4 years of history or social science, and math through precalculus if possible but AlgebraII as a minimum. As many honors next year as possible and the GC considers feasible, with the rule of thumb that even if it’s tough take it if you think you can get a B or higher, but don’t risk it if the teacher or your GC think you’re likely to get a C or lower.

I spend most of my time on College Confidential reading results threads (mostly Stanford coz it’s my dream school), and the only reason I even think she has a really really small chance is because I’ve seen some students’ stats who got in to HYPSM with sub-1200 scores on the SAT and sub-3.0 GPAs, without being a recruited athlete or anything (they could be lying idk). But I’ve seen quite a few so I don’t see any harm in applying, although I absolutely think that she should look at other schools that would be better fits for her.

^yup, wrt to GPA, they were lying (unless they came from another school system and didn’t convert their GPA correctly). Even a kid from Andover doesn’t get into HYPSM with a sub-3.0 GPA.

@skompella9892

They are lying.

They did have URM hooks though so you never know (although they’re most likely lying)

@skompella9892 The only hook that would get the student you described admitted would be if the family donated $50,000,000 plus to Stanford.

@TomSrOfBoston Can’t argue with that one lol

Lower income URM students can afford to deviate from the norm on one item IF they have a strong application otherwise (ie., a 1300 SAT in a school where the average is 740 plus work 30 hours a week while going to school but maintaining a 3.8GPA plus well-written, compelling essays and outstanding recommendations…)
The strongest “hook” is legacy and even legacy applicants don’t get in with the stats you describe. Frankly even a development admit coming with 50,000,000 gift would not be able to skate in with those stats.

The only reason we can’t definitely say ‘it would be impossible’ is because we aren’t on the admissions committee. But personally, with the information you’ve given, you won’t be accepted. I’m sorry. It’s harsh. But I think I said some things about possible transfer options in the future. All hope is not lost, but you won’t be going in as a freshman–that’s (almost) certain.I would really really love to be proved wrong on this one. I don’t want to be discouraging. I don’t want to be condescending. I just want to be clear. You have some options here but you’ll have to work very hard for a prolonged period of time, and that’s not an easy thing to do. It might even be more of an ‘apply for graduate school’ type of situation. Really, honestly, pm me if you want to talk seriously about this.
