I am wondering where and how I can some volunteering hours in for college. I want it too look good on my applications. I am a sophomore, but I believe I may run out of time if I don’t start soon. I am already going to start volunteering at the YMCA, but I need more than that to look good. Thanks!
You should focus on things that interest you and not bother doing things just to “look good”.
Totally agree with @mathyone. Do stuff that you’re interested in. If you are considering the health field, then try to volunteer at a hospital or a nursing home. If you are interested in anything else, find ways to volunteer in that way.
General volunteering, such as at the YMCA, is always good for everyone.
Volunteer to help the community, not just to look good. Also, it’s not about ‘looking good’, it’s about ‘being good’. That’s what colleges try to distinguish when considering the voluntary/leadership aspects of applications.
Like the other say, what do you like?
Animals? Volunteer at the shelter.
Health fields? The hospital
Your house of worship? There are options there
Carpentry? Habitat for humanity
Also ask your GC for ideas…they may have resources for you.
Also try www.volunteermatch.org to get ideas.
Other opportunities…
Volunteer at the local library, parks and recreation, sports organization (as a coach, ref, or work the snack stand). AYSO is in session right now-- does your local AYSO have a VIP program? The VIP program needs volunteers to help with special needs players (no experience necessary). Play an instrument? Find a group to teach underprivileged youth or play at a nursing home or hospital or at your place of worship. How about volunteering at a local (charity) thrift shop? Interested in politics? Volunteer to help on a campaign. Have some special skill (computers? photography? origami?) volunteer to teach your skill to kids or to senior citizens.
Lots of opportunities, just find what you enjoy and find some way to help others doing it.
I think the OP is under the common misconception that you need to have volunteer hours to get into college. That’s actually not true. The suggestions of other posters are all good, if you can find a volunteer situation that you enjoy or that helps you explore your interests, by all means, go for it. I think it’s a good test to think seriously about how you will feel if you put in those hours and don’t get in to your desired colleges. If you will look back and say, well I feel good about my work with that organization, or I learned something, then great. But if you are going to look back on that time as a “waste”, as I see some students posting, then find something more meaningful to do.
mathyone is right…EC’s are not limited to volunteering. It could be involvement in many things. It could be a club at school, a band or orchestra, the school paper or yearbook, community theater or any number of things. Even a job is an extra curricular. So if you are looking for EC’s in general, think about what you enjoy and find a way to get involved. However, if volunteering is something you enjoy then there are many good suggestions here.
Don’t forget about the Red Cross! Even if it is as the person who hands out crackers and juice boxes to blood donors after they are done having blood drained, it looks FABULOUS on a resume.
I play violin so I played violin during mass at church. I also did robotics when i was younger and have a lot of expertise in that area so I coached elementary school and middle school robotics teams. Ive wabted to go to el salvador for forever so i went with a group that held a summer camp down there and taught kids science exerements (bc thats my area of expertise). The point is, find something YOU like doing and figure out how to volunteer doing that.
