Highschool Research Opportunity

Hey guys!

I'm a rising senior in HS and just got invited to volunteer in a research lab studying something about the population dynamics of microtine rodents.

First off, as a med school hopeful, should I look for a research project that is more medically related (like cancer research)? I'm genuinely interested in the research, but I just wanted to make sure before I settled.

Question two, the professor asked to meet with me Monday to show me around the lab and animal care facility. Should I dress up? Or are jeans and a nice shirt acceptable.

Any other tips or advice that might be helpful?

Thanks in advance!

It doesn’t matter what your project is. At this point any meaningful experience is good.

I think jeans without any holes/tears and a polo or button down shirt is sufficient until you see how the rest of the lab dresses.

Agree that any research experience is great, it’s amazing how one opportunity opens doors for other ones down the line.

One thing about lab attire, closed toed shoes for safety.

Thanks you two for the help. I followed your advice and considering that the professor was wearing jean shorts and a tank top, I think my choice of clothes went just fine ;)

wow. Well normally for safety you need to wear closed toed shoes and long pants (the PI is probably not in the lab at all so he/she can wear shorts) but certainly t-shirts and jeans with sneakers sounds acceptable there.
