Historically black colleges taking in better students but shoing a declining salary?

The Declining Payoff From Black Colleges - NYTimes.com

Worth a read.

Top firms recruit at the top black schools such as Morehouse, Howard and Spelman. Then there is a HUGE gap. So you are good if you go to one of the top ones but going to the others is problematic.

Having met graduates of the business programs at HBCU Florida A&M University, I learned that they were quite competitive candidates for NYC financial industry jobs. I also read of a distinguised alumnae of the undergraduate Physics Department at HBCU Virginia State University whom was admitted to the Ph.D Physics program at Johns Hopkins University. Also a Tennesee State University degree was no bar to an aspiring TV reporter by the name of Winfrey. Early in her career she got a job at a Chicago TV station, obviously a plum position because of the major market. A BILLION times I’ve wondered whatever happened to her. Apparently she’s hasn’t been a reporter for years. That HBCU degree must have been her glass ceiling.

A few exceptions are pretty meaningless. There are many entertainment stars who never set foot on a college campus. Most of Oprah’s staff is very white. Maybe there are four HBCU where big firms recruit but here are not many and 90% of the hiring comes from a very select group of schools. Firms are just as picky with HBCU as they are with other colleges.
