History PREMED

Hello, I was wondering if it would be more difficult in college if I was a history major while taking premed classes. Would I have to stay longer in college or take classes over the summer? And also would it be easy to get these classes even though I’m a history major? or is it priority for science majors.

What do you mean more difficult?

Do you mean that you’ll need to be more pro-active than bio major in making sure that you schedule all your pre-requisite classes?

Then, yes, you would since there is no overlap between graduation requirements for a history major and med school pre-reqs.

Not necessarily. But you need to sit down now and plan your course sequences for the next 4 years. (HINT: use a spreadsheet.) Include required major classes, med school pre-reqs and mandatory GEs needed for graduation. There should be suggested course sequences for your major on the history department homepage. Fit in your pre-reqs wherever you have an open slot in your schedule. See which pre-reqs can serve double duty by also fulfilling a GE requirement.

That depends on the policies of your college. Except for biochem, all med school pre-reqs are basically intro level classes–which are usually open to everyone. Your particular college may have a policy where majors get first priority when registering for classes/labs required by their major, but that shouldn’t be major obstacle unless you’re attending a tiny, tiny college with extremely limited lecture/lab space.
