HKU or HKUST

Haha, yup I had mine done physically. Good luck with your phone interview then :)

The 20,000 HKD deposit is crazy. I am not sure if I want to pay it or not. Why are they charging so much and only giving me 18 days to decide. Due April 20th.

@ysbera: Are you waiting to see if you get an offer from HKU? If you are, write to HKU immediately and address your problem. If you are really a candidate they want - they would’ve had the decision already - I am sure they can make an exception and release the decision to you.

@TheGrand: Well if I go to HK I would probably go to HKUST for its program, so I am not really waiting on HKU. Its more that I am undecided of where I want to go to college yet, either US, UK or HK so I would like more time to actually go visit them and everything will of course depend on my IB results. But US deposit is fairly cheap and for the UK it costs nothing so thats pretty nice, but HKUST haha 2600 USD… $2600…

Are many of you like me and not sure what to do? Like I really want to accept their offer and see what happens later on but yea… Like Donutz said it is a lot of money to “throw away”

@Flibb hey, I saw on the Pakistani thread that you could accepted to a couple of schools, so if you get an offer from HKUST for the Dual Degree, will you go? Is it high on your list?

@ysbera: Well yes I was actually accepted to Carnegie Mellon (Computer Science and Business) and Texas A&M (Engineering), both in Qatar (branch campuses), but I am still waiting for their financial aid…

When it comes to deciding between these, financial assistance will play a significant role. My list is just three unis, UST, TA&M and CMU, and UST definitely has a high place. If I do get a scholarship for the Double Degree, I’ll definitely want to choose it! Currently, I am VERY confused…

how about you? where in the UK/US have you been accepted to?

Well the schools in the UK/US I am still considering are Imperial, WashU, CMU and I am waiting for my waitlist decisions. But I would love to go to any of them including HKUST but yea I really need to know more about these schools (through visiting over the summer) before I commit my next fours to them.

@ysbera: Well the good thing is that you know all of the decisions (to the schools you may want to go to) and so it is just deciding between the three places. Well, you are in a slightly better position than me since you know you would be going to UST if you are going to HK - I still haven’t gotten anything from HKU yet. I also have to decide between UK, US and HK (if I get in) and since cost is a major factor for me, I would most definitely go to HK. I would go to the US instead of UK (even though 4 years vs 3 years - so basically 1 more year of fees) because there is a proper campus there and after all I went through so much trouble and bothered to apply - and that I like the US’ education more than that of UK. So I guess that could be some factors you can consider too.

—> didn’t you make into CHICAGO?

ysbera,
Between CMU and WashU or any others in the US, I think you can only send one deposit to one school and have to decline all others by May 1. If you get off any of your waitlist, then you have the right to choose the school that has previously waitlisted you instead of the one you’ve already sent your deposit to. That’s my understanding of how it works.

@Sam Lee, yea that’s how it works, I am only going to deposit at one school at May 1st haha… not going to double deposit in the US but I don’t think it matters if I choose to accept offers at UK or HK.

Oh @TheGrand, are you going to accept UCB’s offer? I love that school, I would love to go there but didn’t apply.

@ysbera, I would personally go to CMU (if considering UK/US only) if I could afford it…Imperial’s ugrad program is, well, just ok at best, and WashU clearly looses to CMU! What do you want to major in?

@ysbera: Yup, I gave in my deposit already - I’ll be going there if I am not admitted by HKU. Do you have any plans in mind yet?

I really really hope I’ll get into HKU because UCB is really expensive :frowning: even though I love it.

@ysbera,

I have a different take from Flibb’s. I personally don’t think WashU/CMU is worth extra 150K or whatever. HKUST follows the US curriculum, if I am not mistaken, and they learn pretty much the same things in engineering. Also contrary to what many people think, CMU is not really particularly strong or special outside CS/EE; so if you are not going to major in CS/EE, a stronger case can be made for going to HKUST. If you want to work in the US, you can always get a 1-yr MS in the US after HKUST. But if you want to work in Asia, then there’s no way CMU/WashU’s work 150K+ since one can make a case that HKUST may be better even if the cost is the same. In China, more people know about HKUST than CMU/WashU.

hey guys, long time no post…=P

@flibb- yea I agree with Sam Lee, CMU is excellent for computer science, i think it is like absolute top in the nation(you probably knew that…), not sure about its other majors.

so i have to get my student visa thing filled out, hope i can send it in on a conditional offer, because otherwise it wont be processed til like…july-ish? i keep on putting off calling them to ask about it. =P

@people: I was talking about choosing from amongst US and UK only, I guess I couldn’t make it clear in my post :)

I definitely agree to UST’s awesomeness!

I’m still waiting… and waiting…

had my interview today, went great! thanks for the help ysbera, grand!

they were talking about a foundation year…still 5 years isnt bad!

I heard that for non-jupas HKU only considers the 1st choice… I hope this is not true right?

@SDG1: someone I know got into her 2nd choice program last year through non jupas admission scheme. I think it really depends on which department you apply for, as the level of difficulty of getting an offer differs from one faculty to another.

Yeah I hope so. Still nothing from HKU… they say they’ll release it in mid april…
