HKUST Deferred admission / Scholarship

Hello, I’m an international student…I applied for HKUST on the early round ( Engineering Program )…However I’ve already got an email informing that my application has been deferred for the main round !! Is that a bad sign or not ? In other words It might happen to successful applicants or not ? Besides, Can that influence the amount of scholarship I may be given in case of being admitted later ? Thanks.

Hi!! Being deferred to main round won’t alter your chances but it is just because they have a set number of early round spaces, so they can’t give it to everyone who applied to early round. If you don’t mind me asking, what are you predicted scores??

Of Course !! Well I passed the Tunisian Baccalaureate Examination with highest honor ( Very Good ) and These are my scores :
Mathematics 17.50/20
Physics 15/20
Biology 17/20
Computing 18/20
English 15.5/20
French 13/20
Arabic 16.5/20
Philosophy 10/20
German 18.25/20
Sport 17.43/20
Average 16.28/20

Ps: I’m applying for Computer Engineering program

@HelloAJ From my understanding, computer engineering is one of the most competitive courses in HKUST, but I’m not too familiar with the Tunisian examination. From what I’ve seen, early round is only for the brightest of the brightest, and main round is for students who the admissions office think would do well. If you have many extra circulars, a strong personal statement and a good recommendation, you would get in. But as an IB student, I believe an equivalent to 40 points in IB or above will suffice.

@coco1997 Okay !! Thanks !! I am just not sure about the scholarship ?? Is it possibe to get a full scholarship only for the first year?

@HelloAJ Yes it is!! but its hard to maintain the scholarship for all 4 years!

@coco1997 The scholarship is based on what? Is it based only on the academic records ? and how to maintain it ?

@HelloAJ from my understanding, its based on academics. There is a one-off scholarship and a renewable scholarship, which is given by the university. It is difficult to retain the scholarship, with a 3.15GPA or above to maintain it.

@coco1997 Ok !! Thanks then in case of one-off scholarship there is no possible way to get another one even though someone get 3.15 GPA ??

@HelloAJ That’s what I heard! You can appeal for a renewable scholarship from a one-off, but not the other way around

Hi I apply for engineering at hkust for the main round but I haven’t received any email informing about interview while some people ( main round applicants) claim they have received emails on interview. I’m from Vietnam and I wonder whether they would conduct interview for Vietnamese ?

@coco1997 I want to know if there are other scholarships to get and how? and when the result will be announced ? @tuantr I don’t know exactly but most of Engineering applicants don’t get an interview ( only in case of a scholarship given by a donor )

@tuantr if you do ib, an interview would probably not be necessary, due to scholarships being determined by score. Usually, HKUST does not host many interviews for applicants, therefore, people who have interviews are usually international students and one of the rare cases (who do international qualifications.) They will conduct the interview in english

@HelloAJ There is an athletic scholarship you may apply to, as well as academic scholarships. Unfortunately, those are the only ones I have heard of for international applicants. Perhaps there is one from where you are from, eg, in HK, the government offers scholarships if you are going overseas, in return, you must guarantee to work in Hong Kong for at least 5 years.

@coco1997‌ well i don’t do ib. I just attach my grades together with my country’s high school qualification and SAT scores.

@tuantr when did you submit your application? and would you say your grades are way higher than the usual accepted people?

@coco1997 Do you think Full Tuition fee scholarship can be possible to get in my case ?or is it only given to those who have international qualification?

@HelloAJ It’s possible for anyone, just you will have to do very well in the interview and be scoring at the highest you can.

@coco1997 I submitted my app on Dec 24th. My grades as compared to students in my country are way higher but I’m not sure about it when compared to those usual accepted because I dont have their statistics. Anyway may I ask your major as you apply to hkust and when did you submit your app ?

Hi! I have actually gotten an offer for HKUST from their school of science with first year full scholarship. Is it a rare case for international students to get it? and is the mathematics degree in HKUST good? becos i have also applied to CUHK for IFAA.
