HKUST School of Business and management, or Indiana University Kelley School of Business

@88jm19 congrats to you for two children’s excellent performance. Actually we are flying to IU and UIUC for a very short visit next week. I hope she will have clear idea after the very short visit.

^ Like I said, it would come down to where she wants to work.
American companies would not go and hire accounting majors from Asian unis. In HKUST likely would be better for Asia and elsewhere outside the US.

Glad to hear you’re visiting both campuses. Just an FYI, but the campus has a lot of construction right now. Students are joking UIUC stands for University of Illinois Under Construction. It’s a little bit of a hassle, but is indicative of current infrastructure investments. Be mentally prepared.

I recommend spending time in the BIF and perhaps Wohlers, where most business classes are held. The main quad is where a lot of the General Ed classes are held. North of Green Street is the Engineering Quad, which may be interesting if your daughter does the Technology and Management minor. For housing I’d visit what is referred to as the 6 pack…Nugent, Wassaja, etc. It is due west of the BIF…although of course there are other dorms as well.

You also might consider an admitted freshman student tour. https://www.admissions.illinois.edu/Visit/Campus-Visits/programs.

If you have the time, check out the Union on the Quad and the Alma Mater Statue near it. The Krannert for the Performing Arts and Japan House may be of interest to you, but you can Google them if you don’t have the time.

Lastly, you didn’t mention the exact date of your visit, but April 5-7th is Mom’s Weekend. There are special events going on that might interest you. https://union.illinois.edu/get-involved/illini-union-parent-and-family-programs/copy-of-moms-weekend. Hope you have a wonderful time at both universities!

Thank you so much for the information. It is a Saturday so I will not be able to register for a campus tour. We have only four hours there , I will try to find BIF ,Wohlers , Green Street and 6 pack first. Thanks again for your assitance !

@852637 How are you arriving on campus?…Flying? Rental car? Driving?

FLYING

I asked because if you have a car…(in your case a rental car)…parking will be a challenge this Saturday, due to Mom’s Weekend. Since you’re flying I assume you’re going to use a taxi from Willard Airport…or a perhaps a rental car from O’Hare? With only 4 hrs, I would try to do a little bit of planning to maximize your visit.

There’s an interactive map that may be useful. https://map.illinois.edu/view
However, I’m “old school” and find paper maps useful. I would print out the following map and corresponding key. It’s a couple of years old but should suffice.

I have a couple of minutes as I finish my breakfast so here are some suggestions:

  • I would start by strolling through campus town…maybe starting around Green and 4th and walking east. There are casual places to grab a bite to eat if you’re hungry. (I know I personally like to fortify myself with food…lol)
  • Walking east you’ll see The Union on your right and the Engineering Quad to your left as you cross Wright St.
Since your time is limited I would not spend too much time north of Green, but a quick walk into the Bardeen Quad and a walk-through of a couple of buildings might be of interest.
  • Back to the south side of Green, definitely check out The Union and the Alma Mater statue. It will probably be very crowded this weekend and then walk down the center of the Main Quad…I would focus on the buildings on west side, since Lincoln Hall and Greg Hall (27 and 43) are typical gen ed classroom buildings for freshmen. Foellinger (7) is an auditorium used for concerts and some of the very large lecture classes.
  • When you get to the Undergrad Library (99) turn right (west) down Gregory Dr.
  • Wohlers (159) is a building where some business classes are held. BIF (1206)…at Gregory and 6th St.…is the main College of Business building.. I would spend more time at BIF to get a feel for where daughter will spend a lot of time if she chooses Gies.
  • After BIF, continue west on Gregory. Some of the undergrad resident halls are between Gregory/Peabody and Euclid/1st St. (1247) on the map houses the large cafeteria (the Ike) for this area of dorms.
-(Note, there is no guarantee your daughter will be in these dorms. There are dorms in various areas of campus but these are closest to business. If your daughter is interested in a private dorm, I would check out Newman Hall)
  • If your daughter likes to work out, the ARC (118) is on the south side of Peabody from the dorms.

I have other suggestions but your time constraint will make it difficult. I have to run now, but will check back later if you have any questions.

@852637 Oops! I forgot the link to the pdf map and key in the post above.

Thank you very much for your information , 88jm19. It was a pity that I left Taiwan before receiving these info and have not had a chance to read them until now. Anyway, we did have a lunch with a girl from her same high school there ( although she is not in COB) and had a quick campus tour. UIUC is now top of our list. Thanks again for everything !

You’re welcome. Glad to hear that you were able to meet up with someone you know and quickly tour the campus.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. The most important thing, in my opinion, is to encourage your daughter to “hit the ground running” and find things of interest to become involved in right away. Best of luck to her!

I was wondering if your children would recommend the housing halls , please ? Best location for business courses, and if possible, closer to the ARC (which is fitness center, right ?) Thank you in advance !

Thank you

Oops! I’m sorry. I didn’t see your question.

For housing my daughter had back luck her freshman year and got assigned to FAR (Florida Ave Residence Hall). It was far from BIF, but the bus did help. As for the ‘best dorm’ for business students, anything in the Ikenberry Commons area is popular, but I don’t know the current status as the university has been updating/renovating dorms…I think some are reserved for upperclassmen/women.

Busey is an all girls dorm that might interest you. It’s location isn’t bad but it is an older building.

For my son we chose Newman Hall, a private dorm near BIF. He liked it there, although he did choose to live at Nugent Hall as a sophomore. (Nugent is very nice, but is difficult for freshman to get assigned there.) His issue with Newman was the dining hours. He was very involved in some extracurricular activities and would miss meals…though he could’ve requested a ‘box meal’ outside of posted times.

If I had a third child I would probably recommend Newman or another private certified housing dorm for freshman year. I’ve heard some positive things of Presby and (maybe) Bromley, but lack firsthand knowledge. https://certified.housing.illinois.edu

Please note that both of my kids lived in apartments with friends their junior and senior years, so I’m a bit removed from undergraduate dorm knowledge.

Regardless, I am a firm believer of “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. I think being resilient in less than ideal situations is an important part of growing up. I would contact your daughter’s friend, who not only knows your daughter, but may have a more current dorm knowledge.

Thank you so much ! You have been a great help to us. I am happy that we meet here on collegeconfidential !

Hi 88jm19,
I am the gies freshman’s parent which has received much useful information from you. My daughter is now trying to join some business frats or other business organizations and asks me for my opinions. Her major is not accounting and hopes that she will be able to double major in Finance as your son. Could you share some thoughts about which frats to work on, please ?

Thank you,
