So I have heard the cutoff for a Harvey Mudd merit scholarship is 700 reading, 750 math, and 700 writing. I got 690, 770, 720, respectively. (800 math 2). However, I also took the ACT and got scores that would translate to above 700 on reading.

ACT:
32 writing
36 math
33 reading
34 science
29 combined eng
8 essay

Would I qualify for the scholarship? I have searched an cannot find answers. Thank you!

There is no published cutoff. Last year my kid had CR - 800, M - 780, Wr - 800 and was accepted, but did not get a merit scholarship. But I am guessing some kids with lower stats and other qualifications (maybe a higher GPA? or more impressive EC accomplishments?) may have been. All you can do is apply and see.

I just got my package from HMC and saw that I was a recipient of a merit scholarship. I met all the ACT cutoffs except for Math. My guess is that it isn’t a function of standardized testing.

Is this merit scholarship different from need based aid? It might be that they just gave you need based aid in the form of a particular scholarship. I don’t remember getting a merit scholarship, but maybe I didn’t make the cut…

The score cutoffs you mentioned are for old format. It used to be that if you made the scores + were in top-ten percent of HS class, you’d get it automatically. The current iteration has more subjective wiggle room to consider ECs, competitiveness of HS, and so on. Those getting the scholarship are roughly in top quarter to top fifth of admitted class.
