Hmm...

I'm already into UW-Madison, and I have been toying with trying out for the music department in guitar something (performance? maybe). Anyways, I've been playing guitar for about 6 years (with lessons, etc.) and can meet all the requirements (2 pieces in opposing styles/fast and slow, a movement of a Bach suite, and familiarity with scales).

So, how would I go about this? Try out next year? Could I try out this year once I'm in school?

Send an email to the music department at UW and ask. They will be able to tell a matriculated student how to do this.

UW has students every year who are admitted to the University but not admitted to the music school. These students can take lessons, usually from a grad student, take some of the classes, etc, but can't declare a Bachelor of Music major. You can audition the following year for the BM program if you desire. Definitely contact the department and you should be in touch with the guitar professor. It is possible you could take lessons from him/her even if you are not in the BM program.
