HPY is Harvard, Princeton, Yale.

The M refers to MIT and the S to Stanford.

These schools are often grouped together in people’s minds – and in posts on this board – because they have extremely low admission rates. Two others that perhaps should be added to the group are Caltech and Columbia, which have similarly low admission rates.

There is an overlap between the extremely-low-admission-rate group and the Ivy League, but the two groups are not exactly the same.

The term is usually HYPSM including variants such as HYPS or just HYP. The 5 letters represent Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford & MIT but are often used as a generalization in reference to the most selective schools.
