I would say that they are about the same.
Just to give you an idea of the selections:
I was selected as the HOBY delegate for my sophomore class, out of 550 others. For Girls State, it would be 1 out of around 300 (Number of Girls in my class…just assuming) I would attend Girls State if I could, but my school only sends a representative to Boys State! hmmmm…

My S did a ton of leadership stuff in HS and HOBY was among the best. Many of the programs that other students and parents were impressed by would have cost lots of money and impressed only people who fell for the “you have been selected to attend - sales gimmick”.

I’m sure the state HOBY programs vary in intensity but all are a passionate about developing young leaders and a respected credential for many colleges. If selected, attending the HOBY World Leadership Congress is a great opportunity to meet promising young leaders from around the world.

I think he would say that HOBY taught him about the need to communicate and that Boy’s State taught him about competing.

As with any selective program, being chosen to attend will mean more to some colleges than others but I was surprised by the number of schools who mentioned HOBY in communications or supplemental applications.

ncmentor-that’s good feedback. Thanks

One week ago I was at HOBY, and it totally changed my life. If you have the opportunity go, do everything you can to go. Most schools select one or two students to represent their school to go to the regional conference. I have been to a few leadership conferences, but none compare to HOBY. When we were driving there, I was terribly afraid because I knew maybe two people, and the facilitators were a little crazy. By the end of the week I had a whole new group of best friends and we were crazier than our facilitators. You will learn new leadership skills in brand new ways, and develop a passion for serving. You will meet friends that you will have for a lifetime, and hear from speakers that will change your life. It is so hard to put into words what HOBY means to me, but if you can go, go for it. I mean, what do you have to lose? Most schools provide funding to go. It is usually four days (you won’t want to leave). It looks great on college applications. But most of all it will change you. You will get close with your HOBY family in such a short period of time and it will be the highlight of your high school experience.
