Holiday gifts for dorm-dwelling freshman

Saw the smarttouch isotoner gloves at Marshalls/TJMaxx also.

Target has the gloves, too. My D in college got some for her birthday. Younger D is getting them for Christmas.

are the gloves useful for a regular cell phone, or only for in iphone or something like that?

Anything with a touch screen.

Great idea for the smarttouch isotoner gloves. Are there other brands available or are these the ones that everyone recommends?

We are getting D1 a camera so she can take pictures of all her friends and be able to have memories of her freshman year. She also wants clothes that they are selling that will say the University and her major.

The gift cards and the noise cancelling headphones have been the most appreciated gifts around here.

Great thread! For the noise canceling headphones, how are these headphones used? To hear music better? To keep noise down while studying? Is there a particular brand that’s good?

Noise-cancelling headphones was the only item our S ever requested in 4 years of dorm living. The request came in around this time freshman year!

The idea is to cancel out the noise from roommates who might be playing music or talking around the dorm room while your guy is studying. In addition, he can hear his own music from a computer, or just keep silence if he prefers.

Good, ample padding around the ears is essential, so room noise doesn’t leak in. As well, the quality of headphones should be pleasant enough that your child doesn’t mind wearing them on his head. Try out several in a store such as Best Buy before you purchase. Have someone talk near your ears and see that their noise is well-cancelled.

We got Bose headphones, in the second-to-most-expensive category, which I recall as around $85, 5 years ago.

You’d think wearing simple earplugs would do the same thing – and I suppose they would – but that’s considered being rude to roommates!! With headphones everyone still feels cool, since it looks (and truly is) that your child is listening to music, not blocking out the IMPORTANT things the roommates are saying. (He had 2 roomies).

We’re doing the noise-cancelling headphones, too. There are some nice ones on Amazon.

I like the idea about the Kuerig Mini, but then I read reviews complaining that these often stop working after 3 mos to a year. Does anyone have experience with their kid using a mini at school?

I bought my neice one of the eye packs that you can put in the freezer to chill and lay over your eyes. It really helps relieve stressed eyes, and if they have aroma therapy, can be quite relaxing.

Thank you payingthreetuitions, I’ll definitely get my D those headphones and those smartgloves sound great too.

My D said the headphones were the best purchase she ever made.

The dorm beds at her school tend to be loft style, which are raised to make space for storage and furniture underneath. So D asked for a clip-on shelf to attach near her pillow so she could put her alarm clock, glasses, and retainer (which she never wears) there. Otherwise, she’d have to crawl down and walk to her desk to shut off the alarm–something one might want during exam week, but not every night.

THEGFG, did you find a clip on shelf yet? This idea sounds great. My nieces bed is also lofted. She has some pouch thing that can hang, but it is pretty flimsy. I am going to look into the noise canceling headphones too. Still thinking about the hotshot hot water thing for cocoa, oatmeal, etc.

My best friend bought my son a Keurig mini (with a supply of coffee, mini creamers that didn’t need refrigeration and packets of Splenda) for graduation and he has used it every day - multiple times a day- and it is still working fine!

By far one of the best gifts he got!

I know they are on sale for $110 at Kohls right now… and there are always 20-30% off coupons , if you use your Kohls charge, to bring the price down even more.

Check the dorm rules before you buy any kitchen electronic items. D’s dorm allows a fridge and microwave and that’s it. No coffee makers. (D was going to use some of her graduation present money to buy a Keurig.)
