Holism

In my opinion, the fact that college admissions is "holistic" is a loose statement. In fact, I think this places too much emphasis on being 'well-rounded' and refined in every sense.
However, I do acknowledge that this gives students a greater opportunity to express themselves through different means.

I'm very conflicted on this subject even though it is the best way of gauging a student's capabilities as a person. But how does this fare for those who are just academically well-rounded yet socially inept?
I am familiar with quite a few students who are amazing academically (GPA, SAT, etc) but lack in extracurriculars/sports(maybe 3 clubs at most with no leadership positions)

I guess I just want your opinion on this "holism"

Do you think it's a valid way of determining admittees or is it too much of an idealistic solution to college admissions?
