Hollywood Comes to SUNY Maritime

I figured I better post this here since SUNY Maritime is near KP. The Law and Order show filmed a segment at the school in January and it was shown last night. Very cool. Here's a link to a story about it.

<a href="http://www.sunymaritime.edu/news/03_20_06laworder.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.sunymaritime.edu/news/03_20_06laworder.htm</a></p>

BTW GO BEARS BEAT KP! HA HA..

going to visit Suny this weekend, anyone know much about the school? Other than it is close to KP.

How did it end?

After all those years the guy probably just came to grips with the fact that he didn't get into Kings Point and killed himself.

Hollywood has already been to KP :)

The Kings Pointer acted as a yacht in 2001's The Royal Tennenbaum's.

From <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265666/trivia%5B/url%5D">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265666/trivia</a></p>

"Scenes aboard Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson)'s yacht were filmed aboard the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy training vessel "Kings Pointer," based in Kings Point, NY, Long Island"

We were also the location for a David Robinson Wall Street commercial back in '00. I even managed to get myself a picture with him while he was there, and let me tell you, he is one tall dude.

Rants, don't know much about Suny. Please post when you get back with your thoughts. I've heard nothing but good things about it and would like to learn.

"BTW GO BEARS BEAT KP! HA HA.." Hey you! Go shovel some snow or somethin'. Were you aware that its gonna be like 80 down here late next week? ;) AND that my Gamecox (notice spelling cause I got bleeped last time I wrote it) are playing at the Gardens?? I'm excited.

GO KP BEAT CG!!!! KP2001, I hope the Academy charged them a hefty fee so they could afford to eat more than chicken for a while atleast. Truly, that is cool. I'll have to look for the movie now.

rants: SUNY Mritime is a NY state school that also acts as the "maritime" regional academy for the mid-atlantic states. Thus, if you live in NJ or MD, for example, you get in-state rates. As a school it has both regiment and "regular" status. Most are in the regiment as you can get tuition mostly paid as preparation for the US Merchant Marine and the Naval reserve. They have comparable maritime programs to USMMA - in fact, many who leave KP go there as most classes transfer easily. They have a brand new dorm. Their food is better and NY state has spent $ recently - nice library, etc. Former superintendent is now the head of ALL NY SUNY schools, which should also help. However, the alumni assn. had a fight with SUNY over control, so have split. SUNY Maritime is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, US maritime school and has a great history. Please post your thoughts after your visit!

I have changed my visit day, to a one on one tour and will go in 2 weeks,(spring break) I thought it would be nice to compare the 2. Then off to check Maryville a completely diifferent school out. Have heard great things about Suny Maritime though. Reading this forum makes me more nervous about sending a kid to MMMA. Anyone know the class retention rates, graduation rates? or where to find them.

Rants, academy life is tough. Period. Its not just USMMA. Don't let it scare you or your kid off though. Just know going in that it is no walk in the park. It'll be the hardest thing your kid has done to date if he gets in. Its a huge challenge and some grow & change while they are there just as in civy colleges. I just get bummed out when I hear of kids leaving & vented alittle earlier. Truly, I would be just as worried sending a kid out to any college.
