Holy Cross or Fairfield (free ride) PLEASE HELP

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO, DON'T BOTHER HELPING ME

Life has been screwing me constantly, and here's another example to that list: I got into Fairfield and Holy Cross, but my mom can't afford Holy Cross's $50k a year tuition. However, Fairfield offered me a free ride and most of it is grants. In fact, they gave me $51k a year, and only $3,500 a year is loans and I have to pay for my meals.

Holy Cross is offering me $15k a year, but $10k of it is loans. So really, it's $45k a year at College of the Holy Cross, while $3.5k a year at Fairfield.

My ultimate plan in life is to be a wealthy anesthesiologist, which requires me to get into medical school, and if I want to get into a good medical school, I need a good school behind that. I'm not sure if Fairfield is in that area. I know Holy Cross has a great pre-med program that will guide me in the right path.

On top of this, my mom hasn't been in the best of health the past few years or so, and she had surgery done 2 years ago, but she isn't exactly recovering ideally and she needs to go into surgery again. In fact, she's in pain everyday and it guilts me when I can't do anything about it. With the economy being so tight right now, where can we get this money? That and, our car is behind on repairs and checkups, which cost a couple of thousands more to maintain. She's a single mother, and my dad abandoned the family like 10 years ago, and we haven't heard from him since. So it's just her taking the financial weight.

So pretty much, I'm being forced to go to a subpar school, just when my sights were on Princeton a couple of months back, and I got into College of the Holy Cross. What ****es me off the most about this whole ordeal is that I busted my ass off in school as early as I can remember to become an A+ student, take the hardest courses my school has to offer, commit to extracurriculars, sometimes pull all nighters to study, having my social life suffer in the process JUST TO GET INTO FAIRFIELD.

I wish someone told me my fate years ago before I wasted my life applying myself to get into the top schools, when I would be forced to get into Fairfield.

Now what? Is my life ruined? Or is there still a possibility to become an anesthesiologist? Or maybe Holy Cross can come through and offer more financial aid?

Top schools don’t get you into medical school. Top grades at a reputable school – which Fairfield is – along with top scores on your MCATs get you in. Holy Cross is a great school. But it is not worth going $180,000 into debt in order to attend. Fairfield can get you where you want to go. And maybe you will find it is easier to stand out academically at Fairfield than you would have at HC. But don’t count on it. Good luck to you.

No, your life is not ruined. Yes, you can still become an anesthesiologist. No, Holy Cross will not give you more money.

You, my son, need a major attitude adjustment. No one is “forcing” you to go to Fairfield. You are certainly welcome to go to your local community college, your State university, or explore other options for funding college (joining one of the armed services, working for a few years to save up the money). Or you can just stay home and sulk.

You have been handed an incredible opportunity. Fairfield is NOT a “subpar” school. It is a highly respected liberal arts college that will provide you with an excellent education – IF you are willing to take advantage of the opportunities you will find there. In fact, you could become a “superstar” there, which will help you gain admission to medical school later on. Certainly a degree from Fairfield will not bar you from medical school.

As for “busting your ass in high school,” that has already paid off for you. If you had not achieved that stellar record in high school, Fairfield would not be handing you the tons of money that they are.

I’m sorry that you didn’t get into Princeton and that Holy Cross does not value you anywhere near as much as Fairfield does (as evidenced by the much stingier financial aid package). But life still goes on and you need to make the best of what you have rather than bemoaning what you don’t have. Just read these boards here – There are thousands of students across the country who cannot afford ANY college, while you are getting close to a free ride. If you really can’t bear the thought of attending Fairfield, then just turn them down so they can give your seat – and the money – to someone who will truly appreciate the opportunity.

Excuse me, but how can I attend any community colleges or state schools anytime when the admissions deadlines have passed months ago? What do you suggest I do? Take a year off, join the army, get maimed/killed, or get a dead-end job for a year sulking it up.

If Fairfield is such a terrific school, how come it doesn’t grace any top ranked lists such as Holy Cross in Princeton Review?

Here’s a suggestion, and in fact is what my own father (a very successful, reputable surgeon) did years ago. Money was an issue for him so he attended a branch of his own state flagship school, pushed his way through in 3 years, worked his *** off literally day and night to get through in 3 years and on to a wonderful residency, and is now 74 years old and still going strong. I don’t think that he knows how NOT to be a doctor, and working hard to get there was never something that he complained about. Not for a second. So look back at that man in the mirror and say to yourself “Where there is a will there is a way”, stop whining and do it at a place that will not set you and your mother back extremely far financially. My research indicates that Fairfield will get you there if YOU put your mind to achieving your goals for the right reasons. PS - Going into medicine for the money is not the right reason, and I think that this is your true dilemma.

Your life will be ruined if your goal is to become wealthy via the practice of anesthesiology. It’s time to grow up kid.

I decided that going into medicine is my destined career path because I want to make lots of money, have a prestigious job title, and science is my favorite subject (especially Biology and Chemistry). What else could I possibly major in? I like 20th Century history, especially WWI and II, especially technology, but what good is a history degree besides becoming a teacher?

I’m used to putting the work in necessary to be a top student, so don’t assume I’m not ready for the task ahead.

hahahahahaa.

go to fairfield. you’d be doing everyone at hc a favor

This is a joke, right?
