Holy smokes! Alumni, have you seen King Hall lately?

I can't believe I've forgotten to post this...

I was up in the Yard about 2 weeks ago, and got to sneek a peek into King Hall...... from the balcony of MEMORIAL HALL!

It is UNREAL. The entire roof over the area around the Anchor was completely removed down to the steel structure, and where the Anchor used to be there is now a trench about 8 feet deep. The roof was removed about 1/4 of the way down the wings leading to Mitscher Hall and toward 6th Wing.

They have COMPLETELY GUTTED the place! This was less than a month since my last visit, when at least the roof was still there!

The 5th-Wing wing of King Hall is apparently still being used by the Brigade, and is separated from the construction by heavy plastic. Boy, I bet THAT'S all sorts of fun!

It's good to see the place being rennovated. Maybe they'll finally get rid of the birds and squirrels we had living inside back in my day! Nothing like eating lunch and havving a bird swoop down and try to steal a french fry! :D

I can't do a search for pictures online right now, and regrettably I didn't have my camera, but it was a bit of a shock to see, let me tell you! I'll try a search later.

Thought I'd share. Can't wait for a chance to go see my old haunt up on 1-4.

Lucky bastages, these new Mids! Completely new rennovations, air conditioning in the Hall, and they get drag in town. What's next? Civies for Plebes? :D

Z- unfortunately we never saw Kings Hall from the "inside," but when we were down there a few football games ago they actually had one of those small bulldozers right inside the shell of the building! It seems all they had in place were the outside walls and windows....and even some of them were gone! And you are right- no roof overhead!

Thank goodness the thorpedo gets to eat in Dalghren- at least it is warm and dry, and the lights overhead actually make it pleasant! Wondering where they put all that ice though.....

Talking to one of the facility managers, this project will not be finished for another year. They will gut the other half of King Hall next year. The entire Brigade will not eat together until '09.

http://www.nacufs.org/Files/public/newsletter/jul06/naval.html

That shows what it will look like. Somewhere I found pics of the progress, but now can't find them...

According to my Second Class son, the people that get to keep eating in King Hall are the lucky ones. The Mids who are stuck in Dahlgren don't seem to like it much at all (other than the plebes who don't know any differently). Evidently D. is crowded, noisy and the food isn't always hot. My s. is in King Hall and happy to be there. He said it won't be finished until either right before 08's graduation or the summer after.

Jeez, that sucks. King Hall in all its glory is one of those experiences you just never, ever forget.

I notice in the "before" picture posted by heartcross that all the wood has been removed from the hall. Our table tops were of some laminate or other, but the walls, beams on the ceiling, and chairs were all wood. I will be the first to admit the new (current) look is too cold for my tastes.

The proposed renovations look pretty sharp, though. That skylight is a nice feature.

happily, have not gotten many complaints re: eating in Dalghren-

then again, what do plebes know anyway??? ;)

This must have come from the rumor mill. The article posted by heartcross states that the Brigade will be back in King Hall in August 2007.

A project of this scope should not take more than a year to complete. The Pentagon was constructed in 18 months; certainly, the Navy can renovate a mess hall in a year's time frame.

^^^^^

Came from the Lt. Commander who was involved with the contracts for the renovation of King Hall - Lt. at that time and promoted to Lt. Commander in September. He was a Facility Manager at USNA until late August when he left for one year to get his graduate degree in Civil Engineering at a major engineering school in the Southeast. (His graduate advisor is the father of my midshipman) When we talked about this, as he said, the party line is one year but there is "no way" that will happen and he foresaw the Brigade being split up for all of 2006/07 and most of 2007/08 academic years.

That was a LONG time ago. Miracles like that are not allowed to happen anymore, I'm sorry to say.

I just hope no class gets to miss out on King Hall entirely. That would really be a shame.

^^^^^^
And the Manhattan Project was completed in 27 months. Both projects were under the command of General Graves.

Fortunately, 08 at least got two years in King Hall. They (08) even managed a "wild man" (I think that's what it's called) their plebe year. Don't think D. set up for a good escape!

Just one?

LAME! :D
