Homeschooling and SAT Scores?

My friend got a rather low score on the SAT (1340). How do you think colleges will look at her SAT score?

1340/2400 or 1340/1600?

just like any other kids who got a low score on the SAT -- I am not really understanding your question. in general, homeschooling kids' SAT scores are even more important than their GPA, since there is no class rank and grades may well be given by parents or other individuals not connected to a regular school system.

I would suggest your friend do some serious prep work, consider taking the ACT and look to see what colleges might be possibilities with low SAT scores.

i completely agree ^^

i would think sat scores are very important for homeschoolers.

homeschoolers are supposed to get high scores, either through their natural intelligence or the extra prep time they have.

Considering that the average is 1500, that is a bit low--assuming your friend is a senior. So colleges will look at her score as below average. If there are external reasons for the lower score (learning disability, physical illness, language barrier, etc,) that will be taken into consideration. Otherwise, it may be seen as a lack of self-discipline or motivation. If she is able to prepare (via study, tutoring, etc) and retake the SAT to try to raise the score to at least 1500 that would help alot. Good EC's would help as well. If retaking the SAT or taking the ACT is not an option, she might consider what field of study she can be passionate about. Then choose a college where she can share her passion and how she can be an asset to that school. Another option, since homeschooling, is to have school for another year (I know, yuck!) considering next year her senior year. Many homeschoolers do not have "grades" anyway. This would give your friend a chance do some needed remedial learning and re-take the SAT. Though SAT's are a big part of college admissions, they are still only a part, and if she is determined to go to college, she shouldn't let obstacles stand in her way. She's only 160 point away from average after all, but who wants to be average anyway!?
