Which schools do you think i may have a chance in and what can i do better my chances at the schools which are indicated with a (*)?? Also do you think my school name will be looked into for consideration bc it is a specialized hs?
Virtually no chances at most of the schools you listed especially as an Asian with “low” stats the competition is very tough now a days. You need to increase your SAT score to atleast a 2250 and your gpa to at least a 3.85 (94) to even be considered for top units since you have no hooks that make you stand out
Congrats on the Barnard Science Program. Colleges look favorably at that program.
For your schools marked with *, your SAT is going to hold you back. Even a 2000 will be low and your strong but not exceptional gpa won’t make up for it. You should look for some more match schools
Unfortunately, your gpa and SAT scores are very low for Brooklyn Tech. Top schools will have scores of kids from your school to choose from with better stats. Also, Columbia doesn’t consider you a true legacy if your parent went to a grad school. Not that it would matter that much anyway because, unlike a school like Penn, Columbia doesn’t place much weight on legacy status.
I’m not sure why you would stop at taking the test one more time if your goal is only 2000 and you want to apply to some of the elite schools on your list. If I were you, I would try taking a practice ACT exam and see if you fare better on it. If so, get some prep books like the Real ACT and work on getting ready for this exam instead of the SAT. You can prep over the summer too and take it a couple of times in the fall. I have seen many kids who had mediocre SAT scores do much better (34+ on the ACT.) I’m sure you’re a bright kid or you wouldn’t be in Brooklyn Tech in the first place. Unfortunately, it’s a double edge sword attending a top magnet school like that because the competition is brutal and it’s hard for you to stand out as I’m sure you’re probably aware.
Get those standardized scores and your grades up. I wish you the best of luck with everything!
Thanks and yea I am aware that my stats aren’t the best. I mean there are kids in my class that have 101-104 avgs and this is going to be my last time taking the sat because i already took it twice and this will be my third time taking it because ive heard that if you take it more than 3 times it looks bad upon you.
also i will be taking the ACT in april
Taking the SAT 4 times and getting a much higher score is A LOT better than taking it 3 times and having low scores. Most colleges don’t even require all scores anyways. What are your subject test scores like? They are pretty much required since top colleges believe there is a strong correlation between subject test scores and college success.
i will be applying in the fall so i havent taken the subject tests yet . ill be taking bio and math 2 towards the end of the school year i think in june(?) also the SAT will be changing the one on feb 20th is the last old one. after that its going to be the new format out of 1600 and the new and the old cant be superscored
You have a decent chance at Baylor. http://www.baylor.edu/admissions/index.php?id=871978&WT.ac=Baylor101PS
Before you apply to Baylor think about how you are going to get there from the northeast. You would probably have to fly into DFW, and then take a small plane or a long bus ride to Waco. Its a whole other world compared to the northeast.
Most of your list seems overambitious to me with those SAT scores. I’m sure you can look up where you fall in the accepted students range. Not sure how your grades are for your hs but I wouldn’t count on the hs name to make up for the test scores. You must have counselors at a school like that who have a very good idea how competitive you would be. What do they say? Did they suggest that list?
If you’re a US citizen, I don’t think being an Asian can be a significant disadvantage, because I’ve heard that race is not a considered factor in the admission process of most schools. Your socioeconomic status is more important in the interpretation of your scores.
Your SAT is low for many schools listed. You should try to get 700+ in both reading and math in order to meet the median level, and 750+ to be considered competitive for Cornell, Columbia, Rice, Brown and Wellesley in terms of scores. Some schools on your list, such as W&M, Wellesley and Sarah Lawrence, don’t lay a great emphasis on scores. They value fitness more, which is reflected by your ECs, essays and references.
If you take the SATs more than three times, it will be a slight disadvantage. But if you can improve your scores greatly, you should definitely retake the test. I know a student who took the SATs 5 times and got in UPenn. And you can always take the ACT and not send SAT scores when applying.
Based on your profile, I suggest you add more match schools in your list. And you may want to eliminate a few reach schools? If you really want to get in them and have enough time working on their essays, there’s no harm to apply for more reaches. But such schools on your list as Columbia sound like lottery to me. You may not expect too much from these schools.
I know they’re difficult schools to get into and I wasn’t really planning on applying but I wanted to know people’s opinions and know where I lie . I mean honestly nowadays people can only get into ivies if they cure cancer or something. My only main “ivy” goal is BARNARD
