Honest Q/A with Current McGill student!!

@Rainkist

you cannot take an honours AND a major at the same time. that would be too many credits to complete in your undergraduate years. the joint honours is do-able but you must be prepared to work your ass off.

Really appreciate this thread. Thanks. I’ve been accepted to HealthSci. Took the AP for Chem a year ago in Grade 11 and scored 5. Understand I will rec credit for the freshman Chem courses. Wondering if I should also write the APs for the remaining sci and math. Is there a downside to completely skipping U0? At the moment, I plan to undertake an honours in physiology but also realize I likely don’t have sufficient exposure or experience to make a final decision.

Congrats on your acceptance Eagle09! The downside to writing any additional AP exams is that you will not be allowed to take the equivalent course at McGill for credit. You didn’t mention your eventual plans after undergrad, but if you have plans on going to med school be aware that many med schools do not accept AP credit for some of the med school prerequisites and write your AP exams accordingly.

Thanks EnsMom. Good point. I am thinking of medicine and did check out a list NA schools with regards to the issue of AP as prereq. Looks like most Med schools don’t really care, particularly if you continue with higher studies in the subject areas. With respect to the U0, U1 question, I’m primarily interested in getting feedback on the impact while at McGill of not taking the freshman year. Any insight appreciated.

One caution thing I heard was that if you don’t report all AP scores that you took to McGill and if they find out, they generally will be very upset and could take disciplinary action against you. Not sure how true that is but it is something you should know.

Hey guys, I got accepted to BU in biomedical engineering and to McGill in chemical engineering and I’m just so confused!! Does anyone know what are the research opportunities at Mc Gill as well as internships availability (my first language is french)? I heard the class size at Mc gill is huge? Even more important than at BU? Is there a grade deflation like at BU? Thankssss :))))))

Question on scholarships-i received a major/renewable for 3000 p/yr in bcom, but UBC, U of T both offered significantly more based on merit. Is McGill willing to negotiate higher scholarship allocation if approached? American schools commonly do this.

What are the sports like at McGill?

I was denied from McGill Desautels for not having a high enough average, although I do meet the admission average now. However, now I have to apply for reconsideration and apparently only 1% of people in the past 3 years have gotten accepted through this process. Do you think, by meeting the requirement, including a letter about my many leadership and extracurricular activities, and 2 support letters from my principal and my IB coordinator would help me in my efforts? Desautel’s is my dream school and I really want to go there!

I also have been in contact with the managing director of Desautel’s Institute of Integrated Management, about a new program that they’re trying to introduce. I have stated my interest in the program and will also talk about my interest in the reconsideration letter, stating that I have been in contact with the director.

Finally, do you know anyone who has been reconsidered and accepted at McGill? Any help would be awesome!

Is it true that in-province students are worse than the out-of-state ones? (other than for law or med school)

Hey econgrad  my questions arent really related to a business degree but since you did life sciences in your first year maybe you can help me out? Also if anyone else has any advice it would be much appreciated!!

I was admitted into my second choice at McGill (Bachelor of Science in Earth, physical, math & comp. Science). My first choice was the BsC in Biomed, biology and life sciences.

I read that I could do an intra-faculty transfer to my first choice after freshman year, that would be perfect, but I was wondering how hard it was to transfer? what are the chances?

Also I was admitted to U of T for Life Sciences, and thats whats making me very indecisive.
I REALLY want to go to McGill but since my goal is medical school I’m not sure the Bachelor of science in Earth, physical, math & comp. Science is very appropriate (although I could do an interdisciplinary life sciences minor along with it). What do you think? Would Life sciences at U of T be a better choice?

FuturEng2:

McGill has a wide variety of research opportunities (there’s a building dedicated to Chemical Engineering on campus) and a great many internship opportunities. The engineering faculty does a fantastic job of setting up internship/job fairs where the employers are specifically looking for McGill students to fill their positions. As long as you develop some sort of relationship with a prof in your program of study, you shouldn’t have any problems finding a research position. First year courses can be massive but once you get past them it gets better.

From what I’ve heard, McGill doesn’t negotiate higher scholarship allocations. Also note that in order to keep your renewable scholarship, you’ll need to have a cumulative yearly GPA of 3.7.

Can poli 211 and intd 200 be taken as U0 elective? and how would you rate them, easy or hard?

@makano: I am 99% sure I am starting out as U1 in the fall though I am still listed as U0 on Minerva. I tried to register for INTD200, which is a requirement for IDS (which I want to do). However, Minerva told me that there are program restrictions. Therefore, I do not think INTD200 can be taken as an elective.

Is it true that they don’t care about extracuricullars???

How many students do you know that got generous scholarships from McGill?

Hi! Can you please help me figure out my chances at McGill for Management please? I want to know if by now McGill is still a possibility or if I’ll have to go to Concordia instead.

GPA weighted: 4.1
GPA unweighted: 3.4
SAT I: 1870 (Reading 690, Math 590, Writing 590)
SAT II: Litterature 640, Math 500, Spanish 790

By the end of senior year I will have taken 9 AP courses (French, English Lang, US History, Psychology, Statistics, Macroeconomics, Government, Litterature, Environmental Studies). I also expect my GPA to go up this year to around 3.5-3.7 unweighted. I will also retake my SAT I & II so those scores will improve as well, and I will take my ACT in September.

Thank you for helping me out!

Anyone know when Mcgill usually sends out admission confirmation letters? Thanks

I was wondering how reputable the Neuroscience program at McGill University compared to Top universities in the U.S. and around the world (I am also considering Brown, Berkeley, Stanford).

I also heard that the Neuroscience undergraduate only takes 50 people each year, so does that mean it is extremely competitive?

Lastly, what is the research opportunities like for Neuroscience undergrads? I heard there is a large Neurological research centre on campus, do undergrads have access to such top level facilities?

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys, can you chance me for McGill University Faculty of Arts.
